Great Lakes - When is it time for new wheels...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
when should i get new wheels, I have adjusted my rear wheel at least 6 or 7 times in 1200 miles and the spokes in one area are maxxed out, I can't turn them anymore. the wheels suck. xero wheels it seems like everytime i hit a bump both wheels end up needing adjustment and it was worse at the end, happened more often.
the other question is if i did get wheels should i get tires as well? my rear tire is almost down to the cords.
third question is, if i need both, what brands are the best.

Christmas is a great time to get new wheels. That's my plan to replace the cheap-o stock wheels that came with my bike.
Not sure what your budget is, but before I shelled out for a new wheels I'd take mine into an LBS with a good wheel builder and have them re-tension everything, and check to see if the rim is actually bent. If the rims and hubs are good there may be no reason to replace the wheels. I'm not sure what your experience is with truing wheels but I found that I often make things worse if I'm not paying attention.
It sounds like you definitely need new tires. You can search the Road forum for countless discussions on wheels and tires to decide what brands to go for.

Sounds like you have un-even tension on your wheels. This will cause the wheel to jump out of true very often and greatly shorten it's life.
Could be aggravated by a bent rim.
Xeros are made by Formula and are generally cheap wheels.
What wheels should you get? Depends on budget and riding habits. If you're not racing and want a solid set I would recommend a nice set of custom builts. Those can get as expensive as you want, but quality ones can be had in the $300-$700 range.
You can pick up some machine built "customs" that are Mavic Open Pro rims laced to Ultegra hubs at many places. Performance usually has then on sale for between $200-$300.
For tires....again it depends on your riding habits and what you want to spend. i would order tires from Probikekit.com. They come out of the UK but shipping to the US is free and they just can't be beat on prices....usually about 1/2 what they are in the US.

Probably the current 'workhorse' wheel these days. Even if you want a fancy set, you should have a set of Open Pro wheels as a fail safe back up. Touring, training, racing ... still :thumb:
It used to be the Mavic GP4 tubular rim ... good enough for Paris-Roubaix or back in the old country, Prague-Berlin-Warsaw ! :p

I am currently racing cyclocross on my first set of customs - Open 4CD rim laced to 600 (Ultegra) hubs from 1990.
Thanks for the advice guys, ill probably take it to the LBS where i got it since i get two years free inspection and maintenance. Ive trued my wheels in the past but the last time the spoke wouldnt turn anymore. ill look into those mavics
