The Tange Levin is next to the cheapest thing there is which is the Tange Passage. I wouldn't buy the Levin.
I would get a Shimano 105 aluminum headset. Lighter and freakin solid.
I don't know about that Hatta but it says it's steel.

I think they're basically the same. Get the Hatta for (non-NJS) NJS points.

It depends on the bike you're putting it on. If it's a beater you don't expect to last, then put the cheapest thing on there.

Hatta headsets are nice. They are high-quality, well-made and very solid. It would not look out of place on a nice bike.

Headsets are pretty hard to screw up, you'll be fine with a $15 vs a $80.

As long as you overhaul the Levin and do it whenever it craps out, there's no reason to get a Hatta. And you might as well get a CK over a Hatta anyway. But yeah, do you ride in the rain and is the weather bad for months at a time where you live?

i think you can get an aluminum levin. very similar to a campy super record. works fine for me.

oh wait i just looked at your links. i don't see why either would be different...just a basic steel HS. adjust it right and your good.

whoops. i forgot to add CHEAP. 20 bucks shipped cheap. eBikeshop...most of the google comparison sites are OOS.

I'm probably gonna go with the Hatta off ebay.

I've had several Hatta headsets go ****ty on me. The locknuts easily strip and they became pitted after barely 2 years of use. Not exactly a $100 headset, IMO. The Tange is an affordable workhorse, especially if you can find the steel version. Tange FTW.

I've heard many of the C&V guys swear by the Tange Levin Alloy headset, there are some at Velo-Orange for $48

I just serviced a Hatta and a Tange, not sure what models, but both used for 15+ years. Both were fine. Normally I take everything apart and clean and grease as there could be no grease or really substandard "fish oil" in new bikes back then. At 250 pounds I've been using GM automotive grease for many years and this procedure has served me well.

And lets not rule out the wonderful Stronglite needle bearing headsets. They are great!

Tange headsets are fine. Hatta makes beautiful bottom bracket spindles but I think the Tange headset would be a better value and more or less the same.
