Cyclocross - Would this work?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm already getting anxious for the next road racing season, and need something to do in between. The problem is I don't have a cross specific bike. For my road races and road riding I use my tarmac. On rainy days I use my Windsor Leeds from bikes direct. I thought that maybe I could use my leeds for cross races, but I don't think there is enough room for a treaded tire.
Which leaves me with the one option of using a gary fisher steel mountain bike. How would this workout?

The best cross racers have resourcefulness and a can-do attitude.
I see plenty of MTB riders in cross races.

I know I shouldn't encourage smart ass remarks, but this is pretty funny.

Old school rigid mountain bikes can do pretty decent for cross. Narrower tires with an appropriate tread help as will dumping any excess weight. If you don't mind the work, fussing with the gear train to optimize gearing will also drop some weight.
