I can't wait for next year's technology. I predict we'll start seeing 1000+ lumen flashlights by Spring if this keeps up.

LEDs continue to beat nearly all other forms of light in existence for luminous efficacy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luminous_efficacy). Far and away above halogen at this point.

There are flashlights much brighter than that now. HID and LED. Of course you're right, they will be even brighter and more efficent.

The Microfire Warrior-III 35 watt rechargeable tactical flashlight is the big daddy of portable HID (high intensity discharge) technology. The Warrior-III's amazing 3500 lumen output is the brightest available in a hand held flashlight format.

myself HID in a flashlight is not super practical. since turning the light on and off is what will wear it out fast and the time it takes to warm up and to turn on again would not be practical.

At 161lm, we could see 400 lumen for 3 watt. Put 4 of those in one LED (like MC-E style) and we can see 1200 lumens out of one single source. Another thing, the white colour 4689K is below 5000K, which is fantastic. I'm holding out until the luminous efficacy reachs 250 lumen per watt, and I already have enough light for my use (4 Seoul P4s on dynamo, 1 single P4, 1 single P4 flashlight, and 3 P4s bike light).

i don't think you will find a flashlight more efficient than this one:

"if it gets nasy, get down to business." this thing saves lives, and dogs too!

I should have clarified; I meant >1000+ lumen flashlights for <$100. To my knowledge, none of those are out there yet. Something P7-sized and priced with twice or thrice the output will likely be available by this time next year, and I, for one, can't wait.

There are a lot of us waiting for that.

Does the Lumens add up that way? Do you not get about 400 Lumens if you put 4 3watt leds in one head or in one LED?

No. You don't drive one 4 die LED as you do with one single die LED, 700ma vs 1000ma. There is very little gain going from 700ma to 1000ma per single die.

Luminous efficacy. I don't fancy carrying around that much battery. 300lm/w can mean 1200 lumens for my dynamo light easily.
