Texas - Why isnt there a fixie scene in dallas?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

it might just be that you're hanging in the wrong neighborhoods. I've seen lots of fixies in the Deep Ellum / near East Side area that has all those new condo's going in.

There were numerous fixie types at the recent bike meet at Bishop Arts. Maybe after the holidays we should organize a SS meet/greet/ride. After I buy mine that is :-)

I know some of the folks at Spiral Diner in Oak Cliff ride Fixed, I see them on their way to work cming across the bridge. Also some folks at thnew version of Uptown cycles ride fixed and tons of messengers too. There's some sort of bike shop in South Side area that might cater to the fixed/SS crowd. Good luck.

only about 10 miles, but it felt great!
thanks for asking.

I think the key is the "scene", not the "fixed". There's lots of geezers riding old cruisers around Dallas, but there's not exactly a "cruiser scene" in Dallas, either. Maybe people are just too busy or too spread out to make a social event of the bike riding, as compared to some other cities.

When you get a fixed bike we'll put you in charge of putting together a fixed scene :-)

fixed gear riders generally tend to hate each other.

Uptown Cycles hosted a social ride every Sunday evening for a couple of years. Some of us who used to ride it still get together to ride on Sunday evening now and then, and most Monday evenings. We're a fairly spread out group, too. We have riders from Downtown to Frisco & everywhere in between. And a lot of us will ride to the ride.

When I'm just out riding around, I don't normally pay that much attention to other bikes, so I've never really thought to count the fixed gear bikes I see.

I was just up at the Turkey Roll this morning, and noticed this bike as I was shooting:
http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z172/stephenhazelton/MiscBikePhotos/Turkey3.jpg

Then when we got done, we talked to these guys a minute, and they were riding fixed gear bikes:
http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z172/stephenhazelton/MiscBikePhotos/Turkey4.jpg

I don't know how many other fixed-gear riders there might have been out there, but they don't seem scarce at least.

So here's the Fixed Gear Scene- just more people riding bikes around.

Forget the fixed gear scene and get hip to the fixed geezer scene! I'm a proud member of that hip, happening scene. After our second child I got myself fixed :-)

because Dallas is laid out in the worst sprawl I have ever experienced?
I really hope it's gotten better since I lived there. Last time it was like a 30 minute drive to get anywhere.

ps: Houston ain't much better :(

but the kids here are getting into bikes anyway.
The drivers don't like it. :(

I think Dallas needs an alleycat/scavenger hunt/barhopping/city riding/nighttime adventure scene more than it needs a fixed gear scene.

Someone start an internet forum!

If y'all are not familiar with it, check out: http://www.fixedfortworth.org/

I went to one of their events just to see what was going on. They had maybe 8 or 10 guys there. You might look at pooling the DFW and FW groups if that helps.

that dude in the white sweater and scarf is definitely a hipster.

StephenH

I don't even know what a hipster is, to be honest. That's how unhip I am. But anyway, the guys over at the fixed-fort-worth ride were all early 20's or so. But I think Tom Stormcrowe's a bit older than me and taking up fixed gear, so not everyone fits into that mold.

That's Doohickie on the far right, he wasn't on a fixed gear. One of these men on the fixed bikes said he read the forums here (not positive he meant the same ones) but hadn't signed on to post stuff.

If you don't know about the Dallas "scene" then start bike commuting to work and you will see us. We are there but we don't seem to stay as a group for very long. We divide then reunited, then divide, then reunite. Certain events seem to bring us together every year (ie. St. Pats Parade). I agree though that a consistent ride would be nice. I have a few but unfortunately as a teacher I can't always go to them.

I bet if you go to the Macaframa premiere at the Angelika on Wednesday then you'll meet Dallas FG folks. It's free, at 7:30. If you don't know Macaframa then go to their website and watch their trailer. It rules. It's more ride-oriented, as opposed to trick-oriented, so if that's your cup of tea then definitely go.

You bringin' a bike?

cfear

I definitely want to go. I'll probably ride down with Brian. I'm trying to get a bunch of Denton folks to come down. There's a reason most of us had no clue the movie was being shown. All of us Dallas/Denton/Fort Worth riders are unorganized and, mostly, local. The guy who managed to set this up obviously didn't try to advertise in Denton, and I'm betting he didn't try in Fort Worth either (do the ffw kids know?). Anyways, I don't think I'll bring a bike, unless Brian and them do (Brian, your word on that...), BUT, I can make new flyers for the Sunday ride. I've been meaning to put some up in Denton and sending some to Fort Worth with Katy. I'll probably get bored in class tomorrow and draw a sexy one and make some copies to put up and take to Dallas. We'll see. And, you should go. I mean...this video is pretty hyped. I think I only really want to see Empire more (the beginning of the Empire trailer is ****ing great).

Wow. I had no idea about this showing. Thanks for the tip. I'm planning to go, but only if I survive commuting through the ice storm tomorrow and Wednesday.
