Heard a song from them the other day that reminded me of the pixies, and early Public Image Limited..

Are any of the albums worth purchase?

Modest Mouse is one of my favorite bands. Their music is filled with creative irony, intoxicating rhythms, and intense emotion. They just came out with a new album about a week ago, called "Good news for people who love bad news", which from the few songs I've heard so far is great. There's an album called "This is a long drive for someone with nothing to think about" that is really good, and "The moon & Antarctica" is another gem.

Very underrated band, but in the past few years have gathered quite a cult following in the indie world.

Worth the purchase. But one used first and go from there. That's how I got into the few "indy" bands I like: Tortoise, Sea and Cake, GBV...

Have all their stuff on top of like 4 hours of live stuff. An album that kicks butt is "The Crowed Lonesome West" or something... awesome.

As far as I know, pretty much all of them.

I did a flyer for them when they played back in MT - asked them what they thought of it and they made fun of me for drawing a mouse in bondage gear with a whip. That night, we were about 35% above capacity (maybe more - the bands they were playing w/ were The Murder City Devils and a local band) and the sound guy was taping off the board. Everyone who worked there was thinking their set was crap because they were following the Devils and the Devils had lit their organ (real organ, nobody's member) on fire. The sound guy actually didn't flip the tape over when it hit the end - that's how disappointed he was.

After the show we went to the sound guys house, sat down, drank some more and smoked a little sumpin sumpin then put the tape in.

The sound guy was really kicking himself - it wasn't the rowdy RAWK he was hoping for, but they were tight as hell on that tape. We were just all too busy and riled up by the crowd to notice how good they were. Having the Devils up in front contributed. The sound guy does a lot of bootleg trading too, so he would have really liked to have the whole show...

Everything that I've heard from them so far, I've liked...

My 2cents...

B*stard....

You want the original of a flyer they hated from Oct 27th 1998?

One thing though. I saw them last summer. And before that show, I read how the lead singer is kind of full of himself, and the show only added to that statement. He might have said 5 words to the crowd the whole night, no encore, nothing. So the music kicks butt but I cant get that fact that the guy is a little cocky out of my head.

understandable, but I am not going there to open a conversation with the band...just drink a few beers with skitbra and listen to the music

They've tried to release something a little more commercial with their last album to make more money to support their drug habits. There's a few good songs on it, but I agree it wasn't great overall. They've put out a lot of other great stuff in the past- it always frustrates me when a good band puts out a single that becomes popular on the radio and that's what everyone knows them by.

boo-****ing-hoo -- now everyone knows about your precious modest mouse!!!! You automatically have two cool points deducted for liking a band with a popular radio single? How will you ever get into [name of your local scenster bar here]? What will your elitist friends think? How dare those disc jockeys play something good, now they've gone and ruined your little secret. I know, tell everyone that it's because they put out a "more commercial" album so they can "make money." How dare they do that. Its about the ART man, not success.

Good News for People Who Love Bad News f'ing rocks. Its totally grown on me since this post started. BUT BEWARE -- last week I got dragged into Urban Outfitters, and someone was playing that CD. The secrets out. If you're a High Fidelity wanna-be, you better look for something more obscure.

who ARE NOT completely and totally phenomenal. I promise. Never allow them to be played on the radio.

if that secret were to get out, I'd be as depressed as I was when Death Cab made the OC soundtrack. Lousy sellouts.

Easy there killer. I know the OC sucks but bands gotta make a buck, too. So "stones" and "glass houses" to you. However, if they sell out their hearts and aesthetic to TV shows, commercials, then f**K 'em. You have every right to stop liking them whenever you want.

Saw Modest Mouse last weekend. Wasn't impressed, despite enjoying some of their recordings. Oh well.

Modest Mouse was pretty well known here because they're a local band. I've also quite gotten into Postal Service. Bumbershoot here is going to have some pretty good bands including Pixies and POTUSA.

you missed my sarcasm, or i didn't get it across. Death Cab could do a Victoria's Secret commercial, I'd still love them.

I'm really happy for Modest Mouse. . . I mean if anyone deserves a chance it's them. My fav. is This Is A Long Drive. . . i've been listening to them for a while and can't really warm up to this album as much as the others but based on its popularity it looks like they did something right with the record. Oh and i hate death cab and postal service ehhh sends shivers down my spine.

I really like Postal Service (another local band here). They seem to marry some of the sound of Lightning Seeds and musical concepts of Crash Test Dummies. Some of their more experimental sounds also remind me of early Tangerine Dream of which I am also a huge fan.

never met a female modest mouse fan who wasn't also a very hot, smart woman. possibly something to do with my being in the southeast, so anyone here who's heard of them would by definition be rather a bit eclectic.

Whoa, dude- I don't care if anyone likes my favorite bands or not. I'm just bumbed that what people get to know them as are the more commercial version, and might be missing out on their better stuff. I'm happy they're enjoying success. I must say your attitude was unnecessarily harsh, but then again who cares? I forgive you. :)

Yeah, I felt the same way about Clay Aiken. The tracks he collaborated on with Stephen Merrit and Ben Gibbard before all of that Star Search hoo haa are pure genius.

']shh...don't tell everyone about The Wrens.

The station I'm at has the split CD from the Wrens & Five Mod Four in rotation right now (lovely!), but it's just college radio....so I think the secret is safe for a little while. ;)

I am definately a big fan of the lonesome crowded west and moon and antarctica albums. But don't knock the new one. Songs like the View, Ocean breathes salty, and Bukowski dissplay all of the creativity and talent of their earlier works. Isaac Brock has said he was trying to put out an album that was a little more upbeat than their past works because of all the problems in his life and in the band at the time. Let's applaud this new success, it enabled me, living in Indiana of all f'n places to see them twice in a week!
