Oh, yippie! My specialtie. The fork is a 1", however, the tubing for the steerer tube is thicker guage, making a 1" quill stem too big to fit. The diameter quill stem you need is 21.15mm, or 13/16", as opposed to 22.2mm, which would be 1". These are becoming obsolete, you have two options: replace the fork, or dig up a stem somewhere. A bike shop in your area might have one laying around in the reject bin, LOL, or there are some places you can still get them. Here's one: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/opc.html#stem
You'll have to scroll down to the bottom of the page. I personally found a cheaper way, but I'm lucky to have an old bike warehouse near me specializing in old Schwinns.

Good luck in your building!

you might be able to find the right size headset at a smaller shop, or somewhere where you KNOW there is a huge stock of old, used parts. dunno what you could do about the stem though, probably the same thing i guess...

schwinns are finicky...

22.2mm, which would be 1".
Jessica

FYI, 1" = 25.4mm

Where are you located, it'd help for people to steer you the correct way.

I just put together a Schwinn World SS and found that the Seat post is also a little bit too small for a regular post. Damn it!!! So I got an even smaller post off of a Pugeot and with some Papst Blue Ribbon can shimms it fits.

btw I just got a Letour frame. I think I will fix this one. The only thing is that they both are too small for me oh well. Good luck

Many quill stems (for example, the technomic) don't fit into my old austro-daimler (but, cheaper no-name stems do fit for some reason) ... what I do is hit it with some heavy grit sandpaper and then some finer grit and it works just fine... dunno if you'd have to sand off too much or not though.

FYI, 2+2=4, but the stem diameter for a 1" (25.4mm) headset is 22.2mm.

Check out the headset entry in Sheldon's glossary for more detailed info:

Congratulations, you have mastered basic arithmetic. It seems I misread the post. Thanks for pointing it out.

Depending, of course, if the "2"s are instances of string or int and how you are overloading the method "plus".

The person dissing Toledo now wants to ride here?!?!? What's up with that? Huh? Huh? I happen to think it's decent here, however, and you don't have to be here if you don't want to. ;) Anyway, moving along, I PM'd you. (but you already knew that, right?)

I think you meant Two plus two is congruent to twenty-two (mod 2).
