Texas - Dallas Bike Swap Meet - Sat, Nov 29th, 3301 E. Elm St

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

This is not my gig, I saw it on CL and thought I'd pass the details on:
Dallas Bike Swap Meet - Sat, Nov 29th, 3301 E. Elm St
"Well the first Swap meet was great success (lots of buyers, not so many sellers) so Owen has decided to host another in his parking lot at 3301 E. Elm Saturday Nov 29th in honor of the college guys & gals return home for Thanksgiving. Space will be free this time and reservations are recommended. For reservations call Fred at 214 728 1365. I'll be there with a plethora of nifty Mixtes and single speeds."
See the full Craigslist ad here (http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/bik/929866790.html) I don't see what time it begins, oh well...
It would be cool to see something like this happen once a month. I'm going to be out of town that weekend so I won't be there.

did you happen to make it to the last one? wondering how it was... fixie conversion / beaters, or high end ex-racer stuff?

I was at the first one. It was a mix of mostly vintage road, cruisers, and single speed stuff.
I was there really early and I think there were probably some other folks who were pulling in as I was leaving. I also left a nifty set of Ritchie bars I bought on the back of the seller's pick up. I doubt he will still have them, lol.
I might show for this one too.

I have not be to any of these, I'm total noob on stuff like this. I'd be at this one if I was going to be in town.

Did anyone notice that the posting on Craigslist has been removed? Was this event cancelled?

I actually saw a new ad for it within the last 24 hours on CL. It had a picture of the flyer too. Was that ad removed?
One thing I have learned is that much of the bike community is not very savvy at all when it comes to planning/communicating events.
Chris
edit - yeah I saw where they deleted the original CL ad. What a complete dork. I'm updating my original post to reflect the new CL ad. Like I was saying, one thing I have learned is that much of the bike community is not very savvy at all when it comes to planning/communicating events. This is a prime example of stupid. Deleting the original ad will lead some people to believe it has been canceled. Oops.

LOL--ok, good to know. My spousal unit loves these events. See you there! :)

It's at 7 am in the parking lot of the old Cotton Gin Bldg. I'm gonna be there.

txvintage just dropped by with his swap meet find. I'll let him post it later. Probably best I didn't attend as I spent my bike slush fund cash earlier this week.
As past a fan from the early 1990s of the "Second Saturday" computer swap meets, I was eager for my first visit to this "Dallas Bike Swap Meet".
On the mostly barren Saturday morning roads, it was only a 25 minute drive from Plano to the Bicycle Farm (http://www.bicyclefarm.com).

Ample parking was not only visible from, but less than 20 yards from the bicycles on display. Reassuring for those unfamiliar or uncertain about the area.
My prefence tends to favor mid to high end bicycles from 70s and 80s. Unfortunately for me, not much there fit that category. Oddly, I failed to even find a few of the bicycles referenced in one of the on-line postings. Although, I was only there from 10:15-10:30am.

I did see a $300 Super Le Tour II with a Brooks saddle (http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/bik/938339889.html) and an interesting 49cm Miyata 512 frameset.

The box of odds and ends that I brought in hopes of actual swapping never even left the truck.
However, I did purchase the $5 dvd on "cycle touring france on 40 euros a day" (http://ouraymedia.com/cycle_tour.htm) to avoid going home empty handed.
The concept of being able to window shop and inspect several used bicycles at a single stop to a bike bazaar has the potential to grow much larger here.
Thanks and best of luck to those involved.

I made it by, but didn't see too much of interest- figured I coldn't afford the good stuff, and didn't want the bad!
I didn't realize there was parking inside the area, so I parked on the street and walked in- I'll know better next time. I took an excess set of handlebars, but it looked to be a surplus of such items already there, so I left with the same set.
There was a guy with a dozen bikes or so on the other side of the parking lot- was he still there when you were there? Seems like he had an old Columbia in nice shape.
Yes, there were about four guys standing opposite the dock around about 20 bicycles. Looked like one had just treated the others to coffee. I didn't notice the Columbia. Even ignoring price, there wasn't much that interested me either (especially in my size; typically 61cm), but admittedly I am picky these days.
:innocent: I spy TxVintage's new frame in one of the photos above. :innocent:

I went, too, to show my support for the Dallas Swap Meet Scene, as well as Owen, a friend of mine (you can see the corner of his aqua 1963 Chevy pickup in one shot). The event took place at the old Cotton Gin Building in deep ellum. I used to have some artist friends that lived there in the 80's, and while I was in law school in the mid 90s, I worked for a guy who had a paint studio in that building.
I didn't buy anything, but I'll be back next time!

It must have been the Rossin that I picked up and put back down about 5 times.

That's my guess, too. It's the top most frame in the third photo above, just above the tiny Miyata.

I was wondering what that smaller white w/ red and blue frame was. Not that I'd ever fit on it, but looked interested from a distance.

OK OK, I'm working on gettin it, and the bike part of the room, cleaned up for pics.
And yep, I got the Rossin. It's a 60cm, more like 59, so it may need some stem tweaking for fit purposes.

"Swap Meet - YOU BETCHA! - $1 (3301 Elm Dallas)
"Elm Street Swap meet Saturday Jan 31, 7AM till 3PM. Free space to vendors, no charge to visitors. Clean out your garage and make some money. Fred 214 728 1365"
There was a previous CL ad asking about the swap meet, I think that's why the title is worded the way it is.
