Hey guys, I just stumbled on this great looking Don Walker fixed, and while I would never be able to afford even the frame, I was curious as to what went into making the sweet wheelset that comes with it. Are they just anodized/powdercoated Deep Vs, or are they something custom? Let me know what you think. (And no, I don't know why he is wearing a kilt...something to do with his metal working past, I think?)

I think they are Zipp 440s - I believe I recall DW saying that when that bike was built and displayed. I wouldn't be surprised considering his pretty close relationship with Zipp, too.

H+Sons aren't that deep. Zipps, or maybe Shamals?

I think you may be right here...those angles give you a little bit better idea as to there depth.

I asked him about those wheels at NAHBS this year. They're painted Zipp 404s.

[edit: err, as Soil Sampler's link specifies.]

I thinks no matter what the rims cost(ZIPP?)......he will still put his spin on them.

Edit:Spin = Ungodly Custom Paint

he loses style points because the tartan on his top tube pad doesn't match his kilt...

seriously though, it's beautiful...and I don't think the custom paint is "ungodly"...In fact, it's far more tasteful than the giant logos on stock Zipp rims...

You can't powdercoat carbon - only metals.

It's okay, the Tartan on his Heritage frame(and kilt)is Black Stewart
not Walker Family Tartan.

As long as you use a Tartan from your clan, everything is cool.

shamals arn't deeper than hplussons.

it isn't about powder coating carbon fiber or what not. it is about the baking tempt. the high temp destroys the epoxy used to hold the carbon fiber together. The easiest solution is to just use a oil base paint because you can bake those at low temp.

He is HUGE!!!!

I bet he just uses his bare hands to form the tubing and uses single malt whiskey to throw the flames out of his mouth to secure the lugs!
