this may be a long shot. i'm thinking of commuting to work between newark,nj and nyc. i've never ridden anywhere in northeast NJ, so i'm not even sure if it would be feasible. looks like a lot of truck and highway traffic...anyone ride this area?

I *think* Dahon.Steve makes this trip, or a similar one - by public transportation and two bike segments, one on either side of the river... might want to PM him for advice...

Greetings:

I don't do that exact route but I certainly know what you're talking about.

There is no way you can get through the sprawl. Don't even try it or you can get yourself killed. Trying to cross the Hackensack river safely is only possible once you get way up north close to Fort Lee. (30 miles away) Otherwise, if you try to ride your bike on Route 1-9, I'll be reading about you in the papers as another "cyclists killed riding the highway". Alot of people ride highways but you don't want to ride this one. Trust me. This is a truck route and there is no shoulder on route 1-9 once you get beyond Ramond Blvd, you're in no-mans land! In all my years, I've NEVER seen any cyclists attempt to ride on 1-9 into Jersey City.

Transportation Alternatives in Manhattan does not recommend any cyclists riding that highway. Don't get me wrong. T.A. has no problems crossing bridges and riding with traffic but even they recognize this journey to be extreamly dangerous. They recommend you taking the Path train to get beyond the sprawl.

Here are your two options.

1. Get a folding bike. The Path train will allow folding bikes during rush hour. (providing they are folded) Path will not allow you to bring a full size bike unless you get to the station before 6:00 in the morning.

2. Have two junk bikes. - Leave on junk bike at the Newark station and have another one once you arrive in Manhattan. I do this all the time and it works fine.

Thanks for the info! I've suspected it would be nearly impossible for some time now, but I just wanted to check anyway.
