Hey there,
First post, need help. Wife picks up a schwinn tandem at goodwill for $5.25. We thought it was a steal, especially because our oldest son, who is into bikes bigtime and into bike polo, wanted it so he could fix it up. He doesn't know we got it, so we thought we'd clean it up, fix it up, and give it to him.
Can you help me identify when it was made, and anything else about it? The serial number is stamped on the left side of the rear wheel mount. It looks like it could either be A94192 or 494192. The first letter or number is lightly stamped and you can only see the top of it, and even then, not very well. The rest of the numbers are pretty clear.
There is a decal on the seat tube that is round, and has "Quality" at the top, and "Schwinn" spelled up and down and across in the middle of the decal, and "Chicago" at the bottom. There is a Schwinn plate on the front handlebar downtube. There is no evidence that there was a front handbrake ever mounted. The front fender is mounted to a bolt, but it doesn't look like a brake had ever been mounted. There is a rear coaster (?) brake (it has that little arm that parallels and attaches to the rear wheel mount). The grips are gold-ish in color and look like the original ones. The bike is easily ridable as is (with new tubes and tires). Original seats are not damaged as in being dropped or torn. Rust on chrome handlebars and other chrome. It looks like the original paint was red.
I'm hoping that you can help me give some identification to this bike. Thanks! - Steve
