If I am going to get a new crankset, would it be wise or even neccesary to get a new BB as well? When It took it off the bike, it looked just fine and I had an older cyclist tell me it looked just fine. Also, I am curious to what makes the bike smoother as far as pedaling and overall riding..the BB and components inside it, or the chainring and cranks. I think I am just going to do with an Origin8 crankset...im on a budget! What else would be a good setup for a college kid on a budget?

Thanks for answering my extremely new questions,
Freelander

You may need a new bottom bracket.

The crank you choose determines the bottom bracket you need. Each crank requires a specific interface (splined, ISO square taper, JIS square taper, etc) and spindle length.

If your new crank takes the same interface and spindle length as your old crank, you can use the same bottom bracket (assuming it's in good shape). If either the interface or length is different for the new crank, you will need a new bb.
