lol.

It was just a joke saying that no one else plays Guitar Hero but you. The sound of crickets generally indicates the lack of a crowd.

Of course others play GH, but since you made me explain the joke...all humor is gone.

No, keep going with this.

part of the comedic appeal is the timing, if you will; the sense of zeitgeist as an audience, thoroughly enraptured by a speaker, hangs on every word with baited breath and lo, as the punch line approaches, they anticipate, and then explode with rapturous

ahh, who am i kidding? you're right. it's over

Besides, I didn't know playing the guitar was a homosexual act. If so, there are a lot of rock stars out there who should probably give up on that whole "banging floozies" thing, in light of all the guitar they play...

The only Guitar Hero i liked was the first one on the PS2. I haven't really been able to get into any of the others probably due to the song lists... The song list on the first one was pretty awesome. At least for my tastes. :)

Never said anything about playing guitar and being homosexual, said guitar hero is gay, and gay as a figure of speech not like anal love gay. People just generally have a lack of motivation to learn something such as the guitar but yet they are willing to waste hours playing a video game that lets you pretend you can play by pressing some buttons... I will do my part and offer free guitar lessons to any recovering guitar heros lol...

Not everyone who plays Street Fighter wants to roam the world beating the hell out of giant Russian dudes and tiny Chinese women.
Not everyone who plays Mario wants to get ****ed up on shrooms and run around stomping on turtles and jumping into storm drains to save perpetually kidnapped princesses.
Not everyone who plays Guitar Hero/Rock Band wants to learn how to play instruments.

Speak for yourself. Hell, I'd do that with my own car if I could (meaning, especially, if I could afford to wreck it). I've virtually "driven" Laguna Seca over hundreds of laps, half of which were in "my" car, which actually behaves almost identically to my real life car.

x136
11-22-08, 07:03 PM
Speak for yourself. No way! I'd drive pretty much anything at either of those tracks, given the opportunity.

I'm just saying that playing a game doesn't necessarily equate to wanting to do the same thing in real life. If it did, half of my life would be devoted to arranging falling blocks in perfect lines and being disappointed when they don't disappear, and the other half would be spent running around a military base on Mars killing interdimensional demons with a shotgun.

I never played it, but I can't imagine that it would be very fun. I've messed around with guitars, and I don't find them to be all that fun. I only like the way they sound. If I don't like playing them for real, I can only believe it would be less fun to pretend I am playing them.

Well, you need something to do while you're waiting for the next wave to teleport in, or when you can't find that damn blue key.

Besides, the blocks aren't going to arrange themselves.

IMO, Guitar Hero is way more fun than it has any right to be. I didn't care for it until one time when I was messing with it on a display at Best Buy and it finally "clicked" -- my inputs seemed like they were controlling the notes on-screen. When I play it now, I find myself involuntarily making the same motions that I've seen every rock guitarist make. I think it gives a much deeper appreciation for real guitarists, even in songs that we've all heard for years.

Wii Music can't be compared -- it's got much more creative depth despite its short song list. Play at the wrong moments in GH or Rockband and your performance falls apart. Play at the wrong times in Wii Music and it improvises, even following the chord changes.

that's so last millennia. best not to say it like that.

I play the guitar (the one with strings) I don't really care if people wanna play gtr hero. I've never actually seen the game (or any games , actually) up close and have no interest in it. But different strokes. If that is the closest some people will get to playing and it makes them happy, so what? If anything, it raises interest in the gtr to some degree (let's face it, we're a dime a freaking dozen and have been since the early 70s) and the more folks buying faux gtrs means the less on real ones, which means I have less competition. Another win-win.:)

The wife and I used to play guitar hero religiously, but we kind of reached our peak and put it away. I love the game, it just gets frustrating when you can't make it past that one song or challenge.

Anyone who compares playing guitar hero to playing a real guitar is just plain stupid. For pete's sakes, it's a game that has a controller with 5 buttons and a "strum bar". I play guitar hero and real guitar, there are no similarities between the two, besides the word "guitar."

Right, I get like that, too. They're just games, and I don't feel the need to invest enough time to practice the really hard stuff and get it right.

The worst part about the "strum bar" is that it made playing like a bass guitar really hard. I wanted to sit there and twiddle it like my bass-playing college roommate, but because it triggered on the push, and not the pluck, it really threw me off.

More thoughts about GH --

I'm still blown away by a Dragonforce song in GHIII (I don't own that edition, though).

GH version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kXrUQ0mqvE
Dragonforce's music video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jgrCKhxE1s

Between the two, I'm still more impressed by the actual band. But, what they achieve is even more fascinating to me because of the visual representation of those notes in the GH game. I saw the GH videos first, and thought, "There's no way this is for real, is it?" Then I found the music video and was just astounded. That's a lot of friggin' notes.

I finally saw this interview with Herman Li, their lead guitarist; he's got a lock on how the game relates to reality:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqzHPSoqBNQ

And in more news, the Beatles are working with Harmonix to build their own GH/Rockband-like game. In the press release, Paul McCartney said, "The project is a fun idea which broadens the appeal of the Beatles and their music. I like people having the opportunity to get to know the music from the inside out."
http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/10/30/beatles-harmonix-game-announced/

The interesting part about the Beatles deal is that it seems like they're jumping into this videogame thing faster than they're getting into digital music distribution (which they've still not settled 100%). I think that they like the idea of active participation in their songs.
