Having a huge brain freeze today. Installing a new threadless fork. Can't get fork to rotate smoothly, its very tight, but also can't get rid of the lateral wobble. I'm using the same headset I had on old fork, and that worked fine. I think its how I'm adjusting it. I've done this many times before, but am having a brain fart day today I guess. What's tightened first, stem, retainer cap? TIA for dealign with my obvious not paying attention.

Thanks, did the trick. Also would've helped if I put the bearings in correctly. To much to drink last night.

glad you figgered it out, but i'll add this to hopefully save somebody else the annoyance.

i had the same problem, after a sober assembly. had it all together/apart 3 times before i discovered the cap was bottoming on the steerer...tighten as much as you like and it wouldn't get tight enough. add a small spacer under the cap and voila.
