Great Lakes - Winter build

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Now is the season to build, and this time it isn't my typical vintage stuff. I'll be getting bits and bobs for the next couple of months, the frame doesn't come until January. So I'll post pictures of stuff as it comes in. To start, I will build some wheels, and for the record, internal nipples are a PITA.

OOOOOooooo....
Cambria may sell an inexpensive spoke, but thet sent me straight gauge instead of double-butted. :notamused::mad:
I guess the wheels will have to wait until next weekend.

Check them with a gauge/caliper. I have gotten some I thought looked straight, but actually measure out as butted. The transitions are getting really smooth and hard to see.
They DID send me silver instead of black nipples once though...
Nope, they are straight gauge, 2mm everywhere. But I called Cambria today, they were really cool and sent out DB spokes today. I should have them by Wednesday so I have something to do over the long weekend. :thumb:

So how do you loosen and tighten the spokes?
So how do you loosen and tighten the spokes?
From the tire side.

And speaking of tires, I got these in from a seller in Austria, the dollar is kicking ass. :thumb:

So, you can't true a wheel or replace a spoke without taking off a tire? Now that is a serious PITA.
Yep. I am tempting the cycling gods.
But, >knocks on wood<, I burn through tires long before I need to true. I'll check the spokes at those times.

I figured you were talking about a period in your training plan.

Nice iab- are those wheels going on a new frame or on your modern Cinelli frame... or will we just have to wait and see?

Awesome Baby! Keep them coming.
You coming to my party? Sorry if I missed you earlier. Doh!
Spare tubular bag. I would prefer black. Let me know if you want to trade.

Great thread, iab! I will definitely do this for my next build.
I don't have another Cinelli pouch to trade for that, but I do like that pouch. What's it made of (especially the strap), and what would you like for it? What do they sell for?
What seat post diameter will you need? I have a small collection.

The pouch is leather and the strap is a very luxurious vinyl . I really only want a black one, the red is an excellent second choice.
No worries about the seatpost, I'm good with what I have.
On a separate note, I tried the new seat on the old bike, very comfortable. :thumb:

Thanks for your help psimet. BTW, do you have a campy freewheel socket?

iab, that's a nice lookin wheelset, and a big cluster! 13-29 (+1!)? What's the gearing going to be?
It's 13-26 and this old man caved and got a compact (50/34). Barlow Road on a 39/27 makes me weep. :p

My Mondonico (that's the one that has the brakes you found for me --thks again!) has 13-29 and a 53/39 - I'm thinking of a compact on that now. I'm usually good (well, I survive!) on the hills, but I plan to do more in Northern Michigan next season, possibly Fred's Traverse City area hilly ride.

You do know "peddles" is a verb synonymous with "sells," and has nothing to do with feet or "pedals?"
I.e, someone peddled you those pedals.
I'm being forced to find a peddler of cross tubulars for some winter rides.
English is a second language for me, stupid being the first.:innocent:

Lake makes shoes with 4 holes for Speedplay cleats without the shim.
It has been a while, I'll throw you two.

Y'know... all this campy stuff is makin' me wonder what you're gettin' at here.
But, considering the tubulars I can hazard a guess that you're not building up a Brevet/Randonneur bike. Century racer perhaps?

Very nice stuff!
Called the bike shop where I ordered the frame yesterday. The owner was out, I left a message, I never heard back.
Called the shop today. The phone has been disconnected.:mad:
Called my CC company. I'll get credited the $ in 2 days. :thumb:
Called GVH bikes. Tom is way cool, but the frame may not come in until March. :(

Yikes! Not cool - what is going on? Scam, or a shop going under? How well do you know the shop?
Ital Tecno out of New York. I bought my last frame from them, the rims in this thread and some other small bits over the years. I suspect they went out of business, the economy is nasty out there. Also, it wasn't the full price, only a deposit and the CC company has already credited my account, it is now their problem.
I tried my LBS but he doesn't carry the brand and didn't want to do a minimum order. Tom at GVH has one coming, didn't even want a deposit. He just wrote my name down and said I have dibs. :thumb::D
