Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Tires to ride on this?

Moving to New Zealand next month. Many of the roads are good, some are not so good.

I'm bringing my 50cm Kilo TT Pro.

What do you guys think?

I think any tires will do as long as you know how to text on your fixie.

At least 28s. Larger if you have the clearance.

Why the move? Did you go for the skilled immigrant status or what? I've just started the Expression of Interest bullsh*t.

where to get a gatorskin for cheapest price?

Any 28/32mm tire will do you a world of good. I've heard nothing but good things about the gatorskins. My money has gone with Armadillos in the past. I've had my tire wear away at a rubbing rack. Took a nice chunk out of the rack, but still was puncture proof.

i do think 28mm is supposed to fit. i have a 25mm on the rear wheel of mine currently, and there's definitely space for larger.

educate a bike noob, if i put on 2 25mm gatorskins, will i sacrifice performance else where?

I like the picture with the giant mountain in the background. Is that Mt Fuji where they make the Fuji Track Pro?

the only performance sacrifice I believe is that 25mm tires weigh slightly more than 23mm tires. That said, if you get the folding bead ones (instead of steel bead), they'll be even lighter.

I've heard people mention the 4-seasons before -- they seem solid, though I'm not positive about their performance with skidding.

Those roads don't look any different than those in L.A. I don't use special tires.

ooh nice scenery-- i just finished a presentation on new zealand's wine region.

and i agree with above poster--looks like LA, no biggie.

the second pictures shows how the roads are nearly covered in loose gravel type stuff. i ride in LA too and haven't seen anything like that.

It's called chipseal and it can be very jarring to ride long distances on. Get wider tires; the widest you put on the Kilo.

anacrime, i saw your post in the smoking thread about your decision to leave the country. mind if i ask you the following questions?:
when deciding to move, why did you choose new zealand?
how did you choose the particular town that you're moving to?
what will you do for work?

i'm curious and impressed with folks who make radical life changes like you're about to do

I'm a big time nature lover and fly fisher and New Zealand is pretty much Mecca for the outdoorsy-types. I want to take a break from school and life and New Zealand seemed the most reasonable place as half my family is from there. My dad had a midlife crisis type thing a couple years back and moved down to this small town of 8000 people and bought a restaraunt/bar. I'll be living there and bar tending to fund my backpacking and fly fishing trips. All my friends have been real supportive and many doubt I'll ever come back. We'll see, though, b/c I would eventually like a career in some sort of wildlife/wilderness conservation and I feel California is in desperate need of such positions.

But yeah, I'll pretty much be a bum making little money and travelling the country by bike/foot/hitchhiking.
