I need to replace the bearings in a Phil Wood BB. I've ordered the new bearings and I was wondering if anyone had any advise on removing the old ones before I start hitting things with a hammer
Hammer is not a great idea but will work. A press of some kind is a better idea. Are
the bearings really wornout? I resuscitated a set by popping out the plastic bearing
seal and relubing the bearings and replacing the shield. Best bet, is a piece of tubing
with ID only a smidgen larger than the axle diameter and 0.5-1.0" longer than the
longer side of the BB. Get largest size of allthread that will fit through the axle (probably 1/4") and a couple of nuts and 5-6 washers and use the allthread as your
press. This will extrude the axle out on one side and with a little luck the bearing out
of the outer tube of the BB. If only the axle moves you will need several tubes as spacers to push the bearings out of the BB housing and off the axles. Push only on the inner and outer races of the bearings. Steve
Why don't you e-mail Phil Wood and ask for their advice? It's my impression that you'd get a reasonable reply from them.

Thanks for the input, it's much appreciated. I will take out the seal and see if a clean and relube helps but from the feel of it I have doubts. This was a second hand item (came free in a frame) and I don't know much about it's history or age but it is not young and it was used in anger (and maybe pressure washed). I wasn't really going to hit it with a hammer but had thought of trying it in a vice in some configuration to press the axel out. I do like the idea of the threaded bar tho and I think I have a deep socket the right size for the pipe. And I'll email Mr Wood as well.
While I'm on the subject I can't help wondering if the cups will ever come out again if I use locktite rather than copper grease. I suspect they might just corrode in place, especially alu cups tho I ordered new stainless ones. Then again if I use copper grease will they stay in? Does anyone have any experience?
And I'll email Mr Wood as well.
cowdotpat,
Phil sold the firm a while ago but it's still a pretty friendly, low-key operation in San Jose. I'm local so I was able to take the Phil disc brake for our tandem to them for repair/overhaul a few years ago.
