Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - First Fixie ride... sorta...

Ok... I may need yer help here... got home last night... put the tube and tire on my new wheel... threw the freewheel on one side... threw the track cog and lockring on the other...

rode the freewheel for a bit to make sure it was all ok.. sacked up, flipped the wheel around... it was going smooth, until I did what everyone does the first time on a fixie.. I forgot I was on one... it bucked a bit, but then I thnk the cog came unscrewed a bit as it felt like it freewheeled a bit... back to the garage... cranked the cog back on, cranked the lockring on again, tried it again... it was better, but still dislodged when I stopped pedaling...

So What now ? Do I just need to Loctite the cog, and lockring on ? and if so, which color loctite ? or is there a simpler solution that I'm just to blind to see ?

it could be that the cog is too thin and the lockring is not contacting it so that it can unscrew a little before contacting the lockring, Surly cogs in particular are known for this. You can probably tell by hand tightening both and then attempting to unscrew the cog. If this is the case you could use a spacer between the hub and cog, or get a thicker cog (a better idea, more threads are good, and FWIW Surly cogs have stripped hubs from what I've read)...otherwise your hub may get stripped eventually.

ride the bike around slowly. crank kinda hard on it, but don't backpedal (do this in your driveway or right outside your apartment...whatever). get off the bike, bring it back inside and crank down the lockring. sometimes you can't get the cog all the way on with just the chainwhip. if that doesn't work, try what tommasini suggested.

yep.. cog goes on one way, the lockring gone on the other....

I'm sorta thinking that I didn;t crank the cog down enough... maybe

It is a Suzue flip flop hub...

Ya know.. I'm an idiot... and I didn;t use a chain whip the first time around (don;t ask me why, I guess it just seemed tight enough once I put the lockring on)...

Last night I used a chaim whip, and cranked that sucker on, then tightened the lockring down..

and then

I rode it !

and it was good.. even if it was wet and raining outside...
