When I was a child my parents thought it was odd that I would stay up late and watch the silent movies the CBC would broadcast every Saturday night since there were no words...

These films were made before my parents time and yet... they remain timeless.

I love watching silent era films. When I was a kid the local library played movies on Saturday afternoons in the auditorium and typically contained silent flicks (and Charlie Chaplin's were always requested). I loved Lillian Gish and Mary Pickford, and "Birth of A Nation", anything with Laurel and Hardy, swashbucklers, Buster Keaton and the comedies. "Nosferatu" creeped me out, "Metropolis", and "J'Accuse!" fascinated me.

I watch some early in the morning before my training sometimes - when they're on.

Chaplin was a brilliant man, IMO. I have a few silent films currently, but I need to see more.

My daughters and I just watched City Lights and they loved it... Lamplight and I would agree that the final scene is one of the greatest moments in film ever.

It turned into a double feature as after dinner we watched "The Kid" and during the scene where John is taken away my daughters both needed tissue... which I had in hand.

It is so nice to be able to share these wonderful films with my daughters who are at an age where they can really appreciate them.

It's also great that they actually enjoy them. Up until the last few years, I certainly wouldn't have watched anything like this. But since I started watching old movies, now I can't hardly watch any newer movie. :o

My youngest daughter woke up this morning and her first thoughts were about "The Kid" and how...if the Tramp had only won that fight he could have paid the girl's rent.

And then they were asking what we could watch tonight... and they want more Chaplin.

:)

I figure I will find a short film... youtube has an amazing number of silents available and City Lights and The Kid are there in their entirety.
