This summer I am probably gonig to upgrade the wheelset that came with my '03 Specialized Allez sport. After reading a lot of peoples opinions and thinking about the way I use teh bike, I have decided that a shimano hub laced to an openpro rim is the way to go for me. I use the bike to commute, and ride for fitness and with groups.

My profile: I wiegh 180 at my heaviest, and I plan on putting on about 200 miles a week this year for a total of around 4000-5000 miles. I do not race.

Here is my question:

I looked at the shimano website and there did not seem to be a big difference between the 105 and ultegra hubs. I was considering a 32 spoke wheel. Do any of you mechanics who have experience with many different hubs have an opinion on which hubset is better? Is the Dura Ace (titanium body, stainless bearings, 35g of weight) worth the extra scratch? Should I consider using a lower spoke count, in which case I would have to go with ultegra or dura-ace.

I plan on having a local wheelbuilder build these up for me, and I will ask him similar questions, but I wasnted to have as many opinions as possible before I throw down the cash.

Thanks for your opinions.

Just FYI, I happened to notice performancebike is having a special. You can pick up a full wheelset with Ultegra hubs and Open Pros for $200 (plus $30 shipping). Thinking about it myself.

Very little difference between Ultegra and 105. Ultegra is generally the value/
performance sweet spot in Shimano's lines. DA is not worth the extra $15-20
per Hub. 32 hole is standard, 28H is acceptable but fewer holes means you are stuck with wheelsets made OEM and not LBS assembled from spokes+hubs +rims. At 180# I would go with 32H. Steve

I have dura ace hubs. they are pretty nice, certainly nicer then the tiagra hubs I have before. the main difference, though is weight and degree of polish. the dura ace is much better in both regards.

Use at least 32 spokes for reliability and repairability.

I am just finishing off some threads that I started a while ago. I ended up gong with a mailorder 32 spoke Dura Ace/Open pro setup. The whole wheelset cost me less than what the hubs would have cost if I bought them separately. So far so good with the wheels. Thanks again for the advice.

For commuting reliability, a 36 r/32f. You dont see mixed spoke counts on many factory bikes, but the rear wheel takes more load then the front.
