you think it is a 1996 because of the color? Is that what gives it away?

The colour, the STX rear derailleur, the Sugino Fuse crank. 96 was the only year they used that crank, it was an unusual spec. choice. I would ask for a second opinion, but that is my semi educated guess.
Looks like 1996 was the first year for the model. The 1997 model switches to a Alivio crank and rear derailleur and by 1998 the model had v-brakes.

cool thanks, I was told from the previous owner it was a 2001. Doesn't look like one...

yeah, I know, I visited that site after I bought it, and that's what prompted me to start figuring out what year it really is.

I refused the bike and canceled the transaction, guess I'll keep looking for a bike.
