So I put my bike up on craigslist and someone just emailed me to say "Im srry i just had to tell you that the bike is beautiful and if i was you i could never let it go." I thought it was nice. I also got that same comment at the bike swap meet. In the end I still don't know if I can part with it but if I sell this bike I can get my dream bike.

I hate that dilemma.

If you're upgrading to better bike, it should be worth it tho, imo.

I sold a nice track bike a few yrs ago when i went back to school....i dug around last spring and found the guy's # and left him a mssg just in case he wanted to sell it back to me:o needless to say he didn't call. But prolly best for me anyway; I sold it so I probably really didn't need it.

I say, sell it (for the price you want- you may need to be patient at this time of year and with the economy in the toilet) and get the dream bike.:) If you can't get your price now and can wait till spring for the new bike, you'll prolly do better on CL then. Is selling on ebay an option for you?

CAAD9 only the frame.
the CX bike on the other hand, I wouldn't mind as long as I get a disc CX/touring bike.

I doubt anyone on ebay would buy it. Plus the shipping would be horrible. I've got lots of people contacting me but noone has "the money."

This is just a bad time to be selling anything, fuzzy. Believe me, I know:(

You're absolutely right about the shipping - that's why CL is better for bikes. You are probably aware, you can do a 'local pickup only' auction on ebay - unless they've screwed that up, along with everything else these days:notamused:. Depending where you are that can be risky, or fine - it would work here (NY), I think. It's like CL, only you reach a wider audience that will try to outbid each other.

The best way I know to determine whether it's worth listing on ebay is to do a search for your bike model but click "completed auctions" at left and you can see if they've been selling and (if so) how much they've fetched.

I'd try not to give it away for too little (things will hopefully pick up again soon), but don't be like me and hold onto a bike purely for sentimental reasons. Looking back I wish I'd sold my old bikes and gotten newer better ones and gotten more enjoyment/performance out of my years of riding. If you can keep two bikes it's wise to have an old beater, but if having two nice bikes is not an option, I'd always say sell and upgrade if you want to. Life is too short, don't postpone joy:)

There isn't really room to keep 2 bikes and the money I get for selling this bike is for the dream bike. I'm pretty firm on the price as well.

wow. nice! I know very little about BMX but it looks clean enough to eat off of. (Where's the blood stains?;))

I would stay firm on your price, unless you find evidence that you are possibly asking too much (not too much for you - too much for the actual street value - which is essentially what people will realistically pay you, not related at all to what the bike is intrinsically worth). Unfortunately this is tough to ascertain.... I don't know of a (reliable) blue book for used bike values.....anyone?

I really think you'll have better luck in a few months. If the economy picks up as the weather gets nicer (assuming you are even in cold weather area) people are more ready to part with cash for bikes. I know that's prolly not what you want to hear with the dream bike calling:D

If you can't sell it I'd ride the bejayzuss out of it. It really is a beautiful bike....(gawd - this from the idiot that was just telling you to sell it and don't look back:rolleyes:)

It is a Free Agent Speedway back from the 2000s. It is made for racing but it is 100% chromoly, really light and hasn't died yet with all the abuse it has recieved.

Meh I guess I can save up $537 and keep this and get the dream. I'll still keep it on CL. If I get the dream I'll probably part out this one since more people ask for the parts.

$537 is doable.

Keep that one or part it out like you said. If you can open an ING online savings account and set up an automatic deposit each month, you could have the dough ready by spring. And you'll get CD rate interest along the way.

nice to see someone else likes to chart out exactly what they can't afford

I'd settle for:

Gunnar Cross Hairs Frame
Chris King Headset
Nitto Moustache Bars
Cane Creek Levers
Thomson stem-seatpost,
some-kinda bomb proof rims laced to Phils
Sram something or other drive train

fuzzbox
11-23-08, 11:16 PM
It is 4130 chromoly made in the USA.

KV- you don't even know. I do this all the time and it just tempts me more and I know I probably won't get it or some parts I want will be discontinued by the time I can.

One last dumb thought - what about buying the dream frame now, and - assuming the parts are compatible - moving your wheels and parts onto that, selling your current frame, and then you at least have the dream frame built up, and you can sell parts here and there to offset costs of parts upgrades as you can afford them?

Suttree
11-23-08, 11:27 PM
So not knowing about BMX why is the one build better?
Lighter? Stiffer so more power transfer?

I want a Gunnar Cross Hairs bc
it is light relatively speaking

I thought about it but I rather just get rid of the whole thing. I don't really want to keep on ordering a bunch of stuff because the shipping price will be higher in the end that way.

Just want something different mainly. The frame is lower slung than the one I have now and it has an intergrated headset= sealed headset bearings. Overall I like the geometry of the frame. I will be able to run smaller gearing and the small dropouts look cleaner. The weight will be around the same if not lighter. I also decided to go with sealed pedals.

My dream bike comes out to be $1412.78I was surprised for a second, but then I realized that a BMX bike and a fixed-gear/singlespeed bike have pretty much the same number of components, and it certainly wouldn't be hard to spend $1400 on one of those...

The orange and green look like they'll make for a nice combination.

nice to see someone else likes to chart out exactly what they can't afford
at the moment.Yeah, I just filled out a spreadsheet for a bike build last night. Really helps you figure out what the actual cost is going to be, rather than just adding up the frame, gruppo, and wheels and guesstimating from there.

Another problem is if I sold something I'd have to wait for a part to come in to ride my bike again and I know I wouldn't be able to get rid of everything. However, I could order the first part of the stuff now...

heh - looking at the thread title again....last thing I sold on CL was the original wheelset for my 86' Trek road bike. I had a newer wheelset (actually brand new rear, older vintage front) as spare, so figured, get some dough for gifts, make room, enjoy new wheels, etc.

The dude who bought them was restoring an old Italian racing bike and went on and on how hard it was to find black rigida 36h rims blah blah. I put the seller's remorse out of my head, but then it seemed everywhere I turned I kept hearing how Those rims were the shizz and so forth....sigh.....

ah, what they hey. My new wheels are a bit faster and lighter. I like 'em better so far. And that guy looked so happy with the rigidas, so it's all good.

Hmmm...now you're tempting me:( That's a beautiful gtr. I miss Fenders....

I have been trying to sell a few of mine...it's a bad deal right now, no one's got $.

HOWever, brand names do count...I have an old Guild I know I'd do okay on...just don't wanna sell that one unless it's absolutely necessary. Point being you could probably sell your Strat no problemo, especially with that nice color. In fact, someone might buy something like that as a gift, which only helps you at this time of year...

If you need any help with pricing/listing it I've sold a gazillion gtrs before, so feel free to PM.

Peavey should sell. esp. w/tag

The Fender will def. sell, no problem. Problem may be getting your price....but will be a lot easier to sell than your bike.

I highly recommend selling the gtr on ebay, btw. With lots of good photos....Use UPS to ship (worldwide) and you're good to go.
