Foo - Man Arrested For Saving A Stray Chicken

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Anyone else run into anything like this.. My neighbors across the street. had 2 pet rabbits and just let them go in the yard. No food, water just freedom. The other neighbors were going take them in since the rabbits have just huddle in the corner scared. The original owners threatened getting the sheriff on them if they touch the rabbits while in their yard.. We have been throwing the idea around about a midnight requisition...
So this afternoon, my husband sends me this article..

It figures this happened in Oregon. And I'm not surprised it was Josephine County, either. Something funny's in the water down there...

Yep, they're crazy people down there. I'm so glad I live in Eugene, where we all wear different colors, not red neck shirts.

Maybe take some food and water and set it as close to the rabbits as possible just off the owners property. Maybe even set a cage there and the rabbits might come to it.

I was traveling through rural Oregon one summer and stopped at a cafe. I asked if they had any vegetarian food, and the waitresses all started whispering and pointing at me like I was some sort of criminal. I saw them tell a cop who was dining there what was going on, and he started keeping a very watchful eye on me. I really think they thought it was in some way illegal to be vegetarian. Strange things are afoot out in the country.

The next thing that happens is that four Josephine County Sheriff squad cars loaded with militarized, jack-booted deputies with guns show up at Nicks home at 1:00 AM,
 At 1:00 AM these boys need to get out there to patrol the streets and back roads To look for the real criminals. What a waste of time and money.
Chickens can live on their own without the help of humans feeding them. This chicken had freedom, now she lives in a cage. Which life was better for her?
Although I think it is really stupid for the guy to be arrested, but hey, he did take the chicken.

Rural Oregon frightens me. I rode through a few years back, and I still haven't beaten the Coos Bay record - I was called a '***' eighteen times in two hours.

Gee! I thought stuff like that only happened in Georgia. I would love to be updated on this story as new developments occur.

I occasionally travel to Coquille to visit my wife's grandmother. My wife once suggested I bring my bike since the roads seem so conducive to such an activity (wide open highway). I thought about the locals I encounter there and thought better of it for precisely the scenario you endured. How sad.

Some people in the neighborhood have two dogs, a Jack Russell terrier and a Black Lab. They keep them in a small run in the backyard, about 6' x 12'. The poor Lab is so lonely, it stands on its dog house and whines and barks whenever a person or dog goes outside. They have even left for a week to ten days and made no arrangements. Were it not for kindly neighbors, the poor dogs might have starved and become dehydrated. The Jack Russell had figured out how to get out, and she would forage for food, and drag it back for the Lab!
Someone even notified Animal Control and they said unless they could see something from the street, they couldn't do anything. They were asked about a complaint of animal cruelty and said the same thing, unless they see it from the street, there is nothing they can do.
Lately, however, they have been taking better care of them, but imagine penning a full grown Lab in a 6x12' enclosure. She wants to run and play and chase balls and have fun, but, poor thing.

She probably saw nothing wrong with vegetarians, per se, but you were going to feed one! They start to hang around after that and you can't get rid of them! ;)

I can't remember if it was posted on this board or another one, but one cyclist said a group rednecks in a pick-up were hooting at him, remarking on his "cute shorts" and falling him a ***. At a light, he stopped next to them and said "Let me get this straight. You're looking at my butt and I'm the ***?"

The chicken story is pathetic.
As for the rabbits, I don't think a midnight raid is a good idea. Your neighbors could probably press charges of trespass and theft, since you would be crossing on to their property and taking rabbits that they legally own.
Rather than let them involve the authorities, you should make the first strike. They are neglecting their animals, which I believe is pretty universally illegal. Call the police or the animal control authorities to settle the matter.

We actually made a few calls.. On their property and we haven't seen them physically abuse the rabbits. We even looked up "Rabit Rescue" on the internet and they have a local chapter. They can't do anything unless someone has them in their possession. Neighbors behind them are leaving some food out in hopes the rabbits cross the line and stay..

Chickens can forage for food a fat chicken doesnt mean it is healthy also they like to wander around during the day. Chickens only need high protien food for egg laying otherwise they dont eat much
Sure glad I didn't do that midnight requisition..

Sounds like you want stronger regulation on this one. ;)
