I'm reading about various kinds of shifters (Sram and Shimano) some of them say they are "1:1 compatable with rear derailleurs only." Can someone explain please?

shimano uses a 2:1 ratio for their rear deraillers / shifters. basically, for every amount the cable is pulled, the derailler moves two times that amount. or the other way around, i can never remember.

sram uses a 1:1 ratio for theirs, for every amount the cable is pulled, the derailler moves that same amount.

basically, you can't use most sram shifters with shimano deraillers, and you can't use any shimano shifters with sram deraillers. sram does make a line of shifters that is 2:1 (shimano) compatible, though.

..... and you can't use any shimano shifters with sram deraillers. WRONGO! And sram/shimano compatibility issues only apply to RDs
