Classic & Vintage - ISO and For Trade thread parts 2 and 3.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Are we still talking about wall hangings?

That would be between you and your state-appointed counsel, I'd guess.

Hi everyone,

I have a 17" miyata shredder which is too big for me, so I'm looking for:

WANT
A mountain bike frame,
Steel, double or triple butted
Head tube: 1 1/8 or 1 1/4
Brakes: canti or v-brake compatible
Size: 16" (seat tube)
Suspension compatible geometry for a shorter travel fork (like an 80mm)
I don't care too much about the brand, but something really nice (fat chance, ibis, ritchey, yeti, etc) would be awesome...

HAVE
Lots of nice stuff for trade and $$$ as well.

Thanks!

Jeff,

Buy the red and yellow Mr. Spokey spoke wrenches. By far, the best spoke wrenches money can buy.

Now you tell me. I got one of the green Park tools three months ago.

I like the Pedros. That what we switched to in the shop recently. They work much better than the Parks.

Something less than $180.00?

I can't be running to the LBS after every set of wheels to find out I need to go up another 15 pounds.

Wheelsmith. It's what most shops use, and is affordable.

Nope. Never used one. Never have, never will. I was trained to tension them by 'tone/frequency' and have learned how tight I can go based on the parts I'm using.

There are certain combinations of parts which can be damaged if the spokes are tightened to specific book value. I'm sure the spokes on my Paramount track bike are under tensioned but if I were to bring them up to a generic book value the rims would deform.

Unless you're planning on doing a lot of wheelbuilding, a tensiometer is is an extravagance. I've built wheels both ways and frankly found the tensiometer to be a PITA to keep properly calibrated. How many of you tensiometer owners check and recalibrate them? If not, what benefit do you see the tensiometer giving?

N.B. When I was warranty inspector for Trek, part of my job was maintaining the tensiometers for the wheel building operation. That one task easily occupied 50% of my time!

Man, if Trek had been more efficient with JDT, those bikes may have been cheaper..... :D:D

ISO.....and.....WTB!

Two sets of thumb shifters. Set (1) a set of 80's friction thumbshifters labeled Suntour XC power. Nice looking sculpted alloy with a base that blends into the handlebar. I have one incomplete right side IIRC, which needs the hardware that holds it to the base. If you have a front shifter(left) that's okay too. I had to put the old school style Suntours on my Sundance. They work fine, but look too old for the bike.

Second set is a set of the oldest school Shimano XT I believe? The friction shifters that came with the "deer head" MTB group. Has two big allen head bolts, and the nice looking alloy levers. I've been wanting a set of these for a while now. I recently ran across a set, but they were on a bike I picked up for a friend. Little did I know he'd blow the bike apart and rebuild it as a flipper bike. He boxed up the Deerhead stuff of course, hehe. I can't blame him though, I probably would have done the same thing.,,,,BD

Looking for a 'quill' seatpost (27.2) for a 1989 Schwinn 564 frameset. Might have something tradeable (bit of a longshot), definitely willing to pay cash.

rotharpunc
02-11-09, 07:30 PM
what, exactly, is a "quill" seat post?

sykerocker
02-11-09, 09:17 PM
There's a bolt running through it, an offset plug (nut) at the bottom like an old fashioned quill stem. The frame doesn't have a binder bolt or seat post clamp on the seat tube, so the seat post is fastened by means of the bolt running through it, using the offset plug at the end to hold it in place.

Well, the other posters have spoken of the places I know. I love these things, but be aware that these may not work well w/indexed systems.

You could always just get some spring cable or whatever it is called and cut it to length. I've considered doing that a couple of times, but I've always managed to turn up some dedicated bicycle ones.

Putting feelers out...wondering if anyone would be willing to trade my 59cm Specialized Allez steel (NOT 3Rensho), absolutely babied since it was repainted by FreshFrame, and it has a custom steel fork (SLX steerer, SL blades, Hank crown). I'm JUST trading the frame and fork. Looking for a 58cm or so Specialized Sequoia lugged steel, Expedition lugged steel, or something along those lines. This is a beautiful frame that rides magnificently, my old bones just want to ride fatter tires on our bad PA roads, and this frame maxes out at about a Continental 700x28 (Riv Jack Browns don't fit :( )
