I was looking at my old lotus excelle today and realized it had old 27" style wheels, and not 700C. How would the best way to get fenders on this bike? It does not have cantilevers (standard style road brakes), and there isnt too much clearance (tires are fairly fat). I thought about 650B tire conversion, but I like the feel of extra large wheels at high speed. :innocent:

Converting from 27" to 700c wheels is one way to get extra clearance for both fenders and fattish tires. You need an additional 4mm of brake reach if you're going to use your existing brakes.

yea, I figure I might as well convert to 650B though if Im going to go through the whole process or new wheels, tires, + new brakes. How much clearance do a I need for the typical fender?

The figure I've seen/heard is that you should have 10mm clearance between fender and tire; that's mostly so that sticks and whatnot that get taken up in your fenders don't snap the things off. Most of my bikes have fenders, and many have less clearance than that.

You could consider this (http://www.rivercitybicycles.com/mod.php?mod=userpage&menu=1105&page_id=58) sort of installation. Pretty complicated, but no more so than converting your wheel size.
