Living Car Free - Loss....

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I just found out a car-free friend died after being hit by a bus while biking home.
A few years ago he had gotten hit by an SUV - the driver had no license!. When I went to retrieve his mangled bike a complete stranger saw me with it and gave me a used one for him to ride after he recovered. Now this. In every other part of his life that I knew, he was gifted and charmed, one of the most decent people I've ever met.
I am saddened to hear of this.

I am so sorry for your loss. :(
Does he have any survivors? Make sure they sue the crap out of whomever hit him.

So sad, tragic, and unnecessary. Unfortunately, many motorists simply don't know how to safely drive around cyclists and this is the result. I certainly hope that, if the driver was at fault, he/she is punished. I have always said that if I'm ever in an accident (or worse, killed) the punishment I would want is for the driver's license to be revoked and him/her to be forced to commute by bike for 2 solid years. Maybe such a judge will hand down a sentence such as this in this case.

I'm trying to piece together what happened from news stories.
" Hurd, who was riding a bicycle, was run over from behind." came from one story.

I saw a story where it said that the passengers on the bus had to make the driver stop to help but can't find it again.
Anyway for the car-free if you guys follow the links provided by the stories above and do some google searches you can see that his life exposes some of the lies that car-culture apologists post here about how car-free people don't travel far from home, or live lives of deprivation or can't advance in their careers. I met him right after he went car free right after he left the Peace Corps and watched him move ahead in the type of life he wanted to live doing what he wanted- car-free too. Not owning a car didn't seem to impede him at all. A few years ago we were talking and he mentioned to me that giving up the car seemed to liberate him as a person. He said when he drove everywhere he felt trapped and constrained. As I recall he was telling me about the different things he got done the night before where if he had tried to zip around in a car all the activities would have been impossible or extremely irritating from driving and parking.
Brent Hurd sounds like an amazing person. You were very lucky to know him. I'm sure he'll be remembered and honored on the Ride of Silence (http://www.rideofsilence.org/main.php) next year.

Very sad story. Can you list the stories of him exposing the car culture?
The greatest danger of those who are car free is in fact, being killed by the motorcar! I've seen how they drive in India so it doesn't surprise me it happened.
What a great guy, he will be missed.

Sorry, I didn't mean him doing anything, except living a full fruitful productive life without having a car. For example, people post here about car-free meaning no love life. He had many friends male and female. People post here about being stymied in careers if you don't have a car. People post here saying that car-free people never go more than a few miles from home. His life experiences contradicted those common false statements about living car free. I didn't listen to or watch every production of his, but know from talking to him that he felt giving up the car was a huge positive in his life.
