It was a hellishly busy day at work which means it was nothing but back to back to back sprints from one side of downtown to the other and since it was blessedly nice and sunny I was wearing shorts...

My day was not without amusement...

I was waiting to cross and intersection and was track standing the bike and this old white haired guy walks up alongside and says, "you have some great legs" and "you must be in really good shape" which I thought was a little odd but perhaps it was just a nice compliment.

In another office a few of the ladies asked me how long I was planning on wearing shorts... :)

But this is the kicker...

At the end of the day I was getting shelled with trips and had some back to back to back b lines which means these are trips you need to get done as fast as is humanly possible and they pay an immense amount of money (I made $50.00 in under 30 minutes)

So I had just left the courthouse and needed to make it to a bank that was 4 blocks away in under 3 minutes so that I could get in the doors before they closed... lets just say I rode like I was possessed and broke a few laws.

So I get stalled at a really busy intersection (it's rush hour) and am leaning over my bike wondering which lung I should cough up first and feel this light brush on my leg, smell some rather wonderful perfume and turn to see this rather nice looking young lady (30-ish?) who says...

"Those are some of the nicest legs I have ever seen..."

Ummm...thanks.

:o :o :o

And I made it to the bank with seconds to spare.

velo san... After I fragged my hip in January last year I lost a lot of conditioning and it has taken 9 months of pretty hard work to get to where I feel like I am running at 110%.

I had to make a run into our river valley today and the return trip is 1000 feet of climbing on a road that has grades that hit 18-22%... it did it on my fixed gear rocking 74 gear inches.

That made me pretty happy because I could not climb these hills last spring (with a geared bike) and when I hit the top I had another 16 block sprint to pull off to complete a trip in time.

And I'll do this all again tomorrow.

That's crazy. Don't be afraid to take a bike with multiple gears
to save your knees.

I rode from downtown SF up to Japan Town (not nearly the same
elevation gain) on a fixed gear once and I was sucking air--but
I live in a very flat place and most of my riding is on rollers.

Glad your hip is better.

Sixty Fiver

Riding fixed has only been good for my knees and when things were at their worst I could only ride fixed as I could not get a full revolution of the cranks with a freewheel... my left leg would just die at the top of the pedal stroke and sometimes just quit.

It's the joy of sciatica which has responded really well to cycling therapy.

I alternate between geared and fixed bikes and don't often have to do the descent into the valley when I am working... it even kills some of the guys who ride geared bikes.

The city proper is pretty flat.

Kaiju - you're brave; I've ridden in flat country my whole life and I didn't even attempt to ride in SF...maybe next time.

65er - I have to ask the secret of yer se-xah legs: shaved or hairy?:innocent:

Finally RubenX needs to hear from you (Re: Sciatica)

I can sort of relate: my mother in law has commented on my legs before--that was creepy. And a neighbor lady of mine rubbed my stomach when I was shirtless and helping her look for her kitty in the woods. [I mean that literally, by the way, not figuratively, geez.]

I would have told her to wait right there, quickly run to the bank and taken care of business, then rushed back so she could keep caressing my legs.

I won't be shaving these things anytime soon and as it is... I just don't have very hairy legs.

I've posted quite a bit on sciatica and riding here already...we know that riding is good for what ails you although sometimes it's getting into the saddle that's the hard part.

And for the TTIWWP folks... there are pics of my legs floating about this place somewhere.

Wow, shorts in November ... in Edmonton  I thought you'd be waist high in snow by now. When I lived in Saskatoon, the only two places that were consistently colder were Winnipeg and Edmonton. Hopefully the nice weather holds off through January. I have to make a trip to Edmonton in the new year.

It has also been very dry.
