Commuting - New Bike Path Design

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I got a good one for you I caught this past fall. Towpath trail through the valley is on the other side of the canal you see, the crosswalk we are trying to cross over runs paralel to the road you see, you have to cross the bridge which curves back away from where you are going. Granted son hasn't grown to potential yet, but I am 6'1 and still had a tough time reaching the cross walk button.

Nothing unusual about that. In fact, many of the bikelanes here look like that. However, the biggest problem of all it that it appears to put you in the classic position to be right-hooked.

That's pretty funny, but it is better than 100% of the bike paths in my town. Oh yeah, there are no bike paths in my town. :D

Actually, in my town, they underwent a massive project to wider some main roads to include bike paths. You get to ride on baby bottom smooth asphalt. The fine for a motorist driving on it? 100 bucks. Every 1/4 mile or so there is a "share the road" sign. Unfortunatly, bicyclists still get harrassed.

Heh, me too. Another Kunstler fan here. Keep going back and looking at the previous months, fricken hilarious!
Two of my favorites, BTW (non bike related...sorry)

The answer for this is horrifyingly simple.
Build a "bike facility" and get U.S. tax dollars.
Unfortunately, many "bike lanes" I've seen gather so much gravel and trash that they are completely unrideable.
I only ride on smooth pavement. Road paint is something I don't pay very much attention to anymore.

Reminds me of places in Houston where rocket scientist learned they could get money for bike lanes. They basically painted a white line about 18-24" from the curb and stenciled bicycles. Just like in the picture, most of the stupidly narrow lane is split down the middle by the crack between the concrete gutter/curb and the blacktop street surface. My kind of riding. Wonder what other project they did with the money.

I have one road in my county with a bike lane, otherwise it's riding ON the white line with broken asphault, pebbles & dirt. I don't insist on taking my share of the road from automobiles, I'll pull off and let them pass. Upstate NY isn't a bicycling haven, winter makes such short cycling seasons.

I showed the picture to a few non-cycling friends. Bad news: Only one of them could the problems. Good news: the one who understood is a traffic engineer.

That was funny.. That gutter would suck up a road bikers wheel in an instant.
The person who painted that bike lane didn't want the cyclist to stand in the middle of the road during a red light so he put him close to the sidwalk where it's "Safe". Totally Insane.
