Winter Cycling - Road or MTB pedals

This is my first winter riding outside and I pretty much got the hang of dressing properly, but I have one question. For people running cyclocross bikes on the road in areas of snow, what pedals do you use?

I am running egg beaters so that if I have to stop, its less likely to clog up my cleats with snow/ice. However, since I am running them on MTB shoes, I can't fit booties over the shoes. Does anyone run Keo's or other road pedals in the snow?

I am about to run SPD 540's on my Campy-equipped Serotta road bike (the horror .... the horror!). I bought some Answer winter shoes on sale at LBS, and found my old Onza Frog pedals and cleats on my MTB (which have been flawless for 13 years) too far gone to re-use. So, bought 540's for the MTB, and a week later decided to buy a set of pedals for the road bike just so I could use same winter shoe (I'm above Boston) on both bikes. I got tired of cold feet on the road bike (road shoes plus neoprene to booties), and am out of pocket $280 for whole shebang, which isn't too bad for my winter ride addiction. The Answer shoes have been great, and I bought them one size larger for thick socks. HTH. Have a nice ride! John.

I can fit booties over my size 48 MTB shoes. You just have to find them in the right size. For me, that means buying at the LBS where I can try them on.

I bought new ones for this season, Endura MT500 Overshoes (http://www.endurasport.com/Product.aspx?dept_id=107&prod_id=26). They fit nice, slide on and off easily, are warm, windproof and pretty water resistant. A little Camp-Dry will fix 'em right up.

Last year I had a pair from Louis Garneau. They fit, but they're not as nice and are falling apart after one year.

When it really gets cold, I switch to my Lake Winter Cycling Boots (http://www.lakecycling.com/Departments/Mens-Cycling-Shoes/Mens-Winter-Cycling-Shoes.aspx). Use the MXZ302 for two-bolt cleats, and the CXZ302 for three-bolt cleats. Sidi and Northwave have similar products at higher and lower price points respectively.

Back to the pedal question, I run SPD year round. I use the sadly discontinued single-sided A520 "Road/Touring SPD" pedals in the three seasons, switching to the double-sided M540 for the winter.

You need bigger bootay. ;) I run Keo pedals on my road bike, but as soon as it gets cold I switch to Shimano SPD pedals and mtn bike shoes. I have booties for both road and mountain shoes, but the mtn ones are looser-fitting and a fair bit heavier. tsl is correct - take your shoes with you when you pick out your booties.

When did they discontinue the A520? They still appear on their web site and are available all over the place.

I like the M324s on my snow bike and Big Dummy, but stick the the A520s on the others.

It seems to be the "improved" web site confused me. I couldn't find them with all the other SPD pedals. Thanks for making me look again. Found them under road pedals.

Whew! I was wondering how I was going to afford to buy enough sets for the next 20 years of bikes!

A520's are my go-to pedal for winter riding. No problem getting the booties over my Sidi Dominator5's. Don't miss my looks at all since I"m not sprinting. Come spring, I'll go back to the Keo for tempo work, but for basemiles and stops for coffee....I'll take SPD 520's every time (plus the pedal looks the same as the day I bought it!). If they do discontinue the A520, I'd stock up...they're that good.

hmm, I might do the conversion that was mentioned in a thread a few posts up where a guy attached a metal plate to a pair of road shoes to attach mountain cleats on them

I can tell you from personal experience that spd sl's suck in snow. also found out today that ice is slick :D

If you have the money, some companies make winter cycling shoes, but they're pretty expensive.

I really hated booties, since they left the cleat uncovered and water would seep through, so I developed another system: plastic bags.

You can wear them inside the shoe or outside. The bags manage to squish in between the pedal and the shoe if you have them on the outside.

Or, you can use platform pedals.
