Foo - Do you trust pay pal?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I feel like I"m behind the times, and that pay pal is far safer than my perhaps un founded fears make it to be.
Are a lot of you happy with pay pal and have had no problems?

Love it, no problems. Just dont hold large amounts in your acct (see paypalsucks.com), and be smart about where and when you access your acct (cookies etc).

I've used it for years as both buyer and as seller--zero problems. Actually find them easier to deal with than my bank.

I had a paypal account, and ended up closing it, because it made it WAY too easy to buy bikes off of eBay. I know that wasn't your question, but that's what I gave you anyway.
I was very skeptical at first. Called my bank and they assured me it was safe. I have loved it ever since.
I have an account, but don't keep anything in it. I do use it as a means
of paying for auctions, subscriptions, donations (to BF!) etc.
Given the amount of $ that passes through Paypal daily, they are
really sensitive to problems. They would be out of business pretty quick if
it was learned that it wasn't trustworthy.
But I do agree with schwinnbikelove, way to easy to buy whatever
doodad that catches your fancy on e-bay. (can you say way too many quill stems?)

Only used it once so far, to buy a pair of Dura-Ace pedals, and no problems whatsoever. Looks to be pretty safe and secure.

As an eBay Power Seller it's become one of my best selling tools. Buy today, pay today, ships next buisness day. Goods in hand 3-5 days after sale, buyers love it. As a buyer, it's saved my bacon with a nefarious seller who hijacked someones account, took my money and never delivered the goods... PayPal Buyer Protection is a godsend.
This isn't to say that the machine is without ghosts. Our biggest problem with them is email delivery of payment notifications. Now, is it PayPal or the eMail system... don't know. Though we do have a checks & balance system in place that will allow a payment go un-noticed only 24 hours in the event of a notification problem.
Al in all I give them two BIG thumbs up! :) :) :) :)

Well, I'm getting a warm fuzzy from it now that I've heard some.
I have a big fear of providing my bank/credit card/etc info to a 3rd party that I can't.. you know, reach out and touch should something go wrong.
But with the amount of people who use it, seems to me that I'm the one who is unrational.
William,
You could set up a small account with your bank that contains a minimal balance. That way, even if someone hacks into your account it won't be worth a whole lot. Just transfer funds into and out of the account as needed.

I don't have an account but I got an email yesterday asking me to go to 'their site' to re-enter my details for added security.
The email had all the right looking logos etc.
BEWARE: These messages are, of course, hoaxes sent by people trying to get your Pay Pal details.

I use paypal almost daily! I find it very safe to use, as long as I can trust who I'm sending money too. However, ONLY use your credit card to make purchases. Don't transfer from your bank account and don't use your online balance with paypal. If you send this money and something goes wrong, you'll have twice the trouble getting it back. At least if it's on your credit card, you have a better chance of doing a chargeback to Paypal and letting them deal with it. Visit paypalsucks.com. This displays any possible problems you may run into. However, like I said, I am very happy with it and would recommend it for any online auctions and stuff you have to pay for.

I have used PayPal for two years and hundreds of transactions. I usually won't bid on an auction if they won't accept PayPal. My only gripe is that between eBay's and PayPal's fees it is hard to make a profit selling on eBay.

When I sell on eBay, I generally limit it to Toronto. I usually request cash. If paying by cash, I am more then happy to deliver. While I do this, I will also end the bid early therefore saving me the final value fee that I have to pay :) The buyer gets to test out and I get paid only after they are happy. In the end, everyone is happy. I also charge more if they pay by Paypal.

So, you're OK with YOU being the thief, huh? What you're doing is basically stealing the services of eBay; justify or debate it all you want, but that's the bottom line.

Who cares? They hose us on the listing fee alone! Then paypal hoses you.

Not only a theif but a nefarious seller too... and not too smart to boot. I don't know about anyone else but I'd sure be p!ssed if I was waiting to bid on one of IRC's auctions and found it closed early to do a side deal. Woe be to him/er when a side deal goes wrong and blows up with no recourse.
Well, I guess that's the difference between a handful of sales and over 14,000 sales. :D

Here is a guy who found a way to cut costs which makes it possible to sell his items at a lower cost. Plus, the purchaser gets free delivery and some have a problem with that?
Obviously eBay doesn't, otherwise they would have put a stop to the practice long ago.

I don't cut deals. I cut deals with the HIGHEST bidder and the highest bidder only. At the end of the day, I still make the most from the highest bidder, regardless if he pays via paypal or pays me cash. I'm just saying, if he pays me cash and stuff, it's usually a bit cheaper then. BTW, I have 16 positive feedbacks on ebay, 35 positive on howardforums.com and another 5 on heatware. I think by now I know what I am doing. 90% of these have been meet up and pay cash deals. No complaints from anyone. The other ones were paypal and ship simply because delivery was not possible.

Obviously you're not familiar with eBay policies. There isn't really any way they can stop it. However, they don't condone it.
Try to think of it this way... You TR run a flea market, you TR charge people $10 per table to set up and sell their wares. Now you send your man around to collect table fees a 7 AM and some schlep asks him to come back after he's sold a few things because he dosen't have the money right now.So your man goes back 3 hours later and the seller has beat feet? Tell me Mr Cost Cutting Man, how would you feel? Care to hazzard a guess at how the sellers on either side of this schlep would feel. Tell me, would you still feel it okay?

This dosen't make sense... If you end an auction early and the item has $25 bid on it the FVF is exactly the same if you'd let it run it's course and it ends at $25. Tho' more likely than not I find that an item will garner 75-90% of its total in the last 15 min (or less) of the auction. Which will also increase your FVF, but what's a few cents? So, my wizardly compatriot the only thing your doing is short selling your goods
I also charge more if they pay by Paypal.
This IS a direct violation of eBay's TOS agreement. I NEVER deal with anyone who needs to surcharge me for paying with PayPal. Not only is PayPal good for the buyer, it's a benefit to the seller to.

Lessee, now... amd math wasn't my strong subject 16+35+5=, excuse my while I borrow the fingers and toes of some friends... why that's 56! WOW! I'm impressed, NOT. Looking back on it we were just learning to crawl with 56 feedback. Like I said, A handful of sales

Actually, ending auctions early in order to avoid fees IS strictly against Ebay policy, and if he's reported, they'll investigate and possibly close his account.

Pay Pal tried to take $1000 from my brothers account once. Its wasn't too hard fixing it with Pay Pal, but the bank wasn't so easy. Ended up paying about $100 in overdraft charges. Damn that Key bank.

The only thing I have ever run into:
They will 'accidently' charge your bank account (happened to me last week) even though I selected another form of payment.

If it's like my account, it defaults back to the bank account regardless of what you do. PayPal obviously wants you to use that instead of any other method. I always have to force myself to switch it off of bank account to credit card every time. Dirty SOB's.
