Southern California - Who Is Riding In The Rain ??

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I am I am !!! I recently bought a new windbreaker/rain repellent jacket from Specialized so I guess I have no excuses now. Also, I am getting sick, so a ride in the rain seems like a good idea.
I would hate to live someplace that snows or rains alot.

I ride in the rain if I really want to ride. Not too much here in Cali though so I'd rather not only cause I've seen what the rain does to the grease inside the wheel hubs. Not to mention the wear on the brake pads. On the GMR raindride a few years ago, I toasted a new set of brake pads on a 21 mile descent. One good thing about riding a tanedem in the rain is theat the stoker takes most of the abuse from the rear wheel!:D (last pic)
A couple of years back I did a 40 mile ride on the SART in the POURING rain. I took my mtb knowing it wouldn't stop. It was great! Exhililarating, clean, fresh and the rooster tails!:thumb:. The entire ride I encountered maybe 2 others on the 40 miles. But I did have to stop a couple of times to wring out the duds!:D

I was thinking of installing some nice fenders on one of my bikes mostly as a fashion accessory but they may come in handy after all.

Riding in the rain is fine with me as long as I got my shoe covers on. I can't stand when my shoes are filled with and my feet are sloshing around.

I don't mind riding in the rain.. I use a no tools fender to keep the backside dry.. It is quick to install.. The Headlands Rear Fender..

A few drops of rain yesterday on the return commute from LAX.
I won't start a ride in the rain on my road bike but I will on my MTB.
I've used the old bike for the rainy days. Mostly stick to the beach path...flat and usually no one else around. The MTB I thrash with too.
The rollers should help this winter....if I ever get up to speed. Those things are tricky.

My roommate and I went on a short 6 mile ride today. I was hoping to do around 50ish miles to counter all the food, but neither of us have rain gear (seems pointless to own it in San Diego) so we did a short ride. My fingers are still numb from it.

I rode the OCRR club ride today (Thankgiving) and it rained for about the first 1-1/2 hours, with diffferent levels of intensity, but I was soaked reasonably quickly.
Wool is great though! Even wet my wool socks kept my feet toasty, and ditto my wool base layer helped me keep a good core temperature. When the sun came out it still didn't get a lot warmer, so my clothing pick was good for today.
Overall a lovely ride, and I think this was my first time up Newport Coast in the rain!

A quick ride out in Santiago/Silverado Canyon this morning. Took the commute bike, since I had expected I would get rained on, and I did. The rain got harder and harder the further I dropped back into the clouds on Silverado Canyon.
I just built up a new bike for riding in the rain

I like that Tricross umd! With the wider tires, have you experienced any MPH loss?

I was going the same speed with maybe 5-10% more power. They are wider and somewhat knobby.

I suspected that you wouldn't lose any speed........I looked at the Tricross as my transition bike from MTB to road, but knew that the off/on road tires would keep my speed down.......I don't have the extra power you have......or I'm not willing to put the extra effort into it at my age.

They are just regular road wheels so there is no reason you can't run regular road tires. With road tires there should be no difference from any other 19lb. bike, except that the cross geometry made cornering kinda funny since I wasn't use to it...

Now did you buy the frame and build it up or buy it complete from the LBS? It looks like you fancied it up nicely!
I bought the frame and built it up. I had most everything already laying around the house. Some of it I took off my TCR. Actually the only thing I bought was the BB, shifters, RD, and chain.

One quick question for everyone that rode in the rain yesterday: how do you dry out your shoes? I removed my insoles set them and the shoes by the heater yesterday and they're still soaked. I was hoping to go for a ride today as it's not raining, but I can't due to sopping shoes.

You need to stuff some newspaper into your shoes. They're soak up most of the moisture.
Yep! As roadfix said, stuffing shoes with old newspaper and periodically replacing the papers until all moisture is soaked up is the proper way to dry out wet cycling shoes.
