The motivation for this post is the result of my failed attempt at a warranty claim for a LAS Squalo helmet.

About a year after purchase a couple of cracks developed at the inside front of the helmet. The helmet was returned to the LBS at which time they indicated they'd show it to the LAS rep. Ultimately, LAS said they've never seen a helmet fail and refused my warranty claim.

So, if they had seen this failure before, then they'd warranty it? Because this isn't something they've seen, it's not going to be replaced?

As may be predictable, I'm frustrated at the lack of service provided by LAS to this point. Since purchasing this helmet, I have suggested it to friends and co-workers. I've even purchased more than one myself.

If someone knows a LAS rep, I am interested in speaking with a representative of the company (independent or company direct) to learn more about why the helmet was not covered by their warranty. Unfortunately, my attempts at contacting them directly have been unsuccessful as I have received no response. I doubt this company is entirely lacking in a customer service department. Or are they?

After paying full retail (I forgot 160? 180?) two times for a helmet, and suggesting the same model to friends/colleagues, I'm not too happy with the way this is going so far. This is the most I've spent on a helmet, and it's lasted only a fraction of the time as other brands I've used in the past.

Was the foam of the helmet cracked like what happens upon an impact?

If so, what is the LAS warranty in the case of an accident? I paid $40 for my LBS store-brand (Airius) helmet, did a faceplant over my handlebars and cracked it. Airius replaced it free of charge... completely free of charge.

I really don't see the point in getting a more expensive helmet; the high-end people either don't honor warranties or only offer partial warranties. Meanwhile, Airius stands behind my cheapie helmet, and it protected my head just fine when I wrecked.

I'll do my best to describe the cracks as LAS has the helmet at this time.

If you're looking into into the helmet from beneath and the front is in the 12 o'clock position, the cracks are at roughly 11 and 1. They go from the part that touches your head and branch toward the outer plastic shell. There is noticeable flex in the areas where the cracks are. The helmet was not involved in a crash of any magnitude.

The shop said they offered another at cost ($110?).

Bike store brand helmet? Airius? Interesting. I liked the LAS due to the comfortable fit and how the securing mechanism worked with ease. But these positive attributes are meaningless if the thing will barely last a season and the company turns their shoulder when a warranty claim is submitted.

The whole situation sucks. My shop indicated it wouldn't be a problem when they looked at it. They thought LAS would surely warranty the helmet. Booo!

That's exactly what I've seen in my helmets after a crash. Is it possible that someone (kids, spouse, co-workers) could have dropped it and just quietly put it back in it's place without telling you? I just don't see how that kind of damage could be a manufacturing defect.

You may not be happy with an Airius or other LBS "store brand" helmet after having had a hoity-toity one. But when I got my Airius I was impressed on how comfortable and easy to fit it is compared to the last helmet I bought which was at least 15 years ago. I found the Airius to be comfy and cool and easy to adjust.

Also, it has both a reflective patch on the back and a red LED that either lights up constantly or blinks. It was the first bicycle light I bought when I started riding again last February.
