I noticed Google has images from Life magazine indexed. If you search using "bicycle" you get a peek at the way biking used to be. There is a series of photos of Rita Hayworth taking a 10 mile bicycle picnic with some friends, and other junk like that.
Here are a couple of photos from France in the 1940s.
There are some photos in the collection from the 1950s showing police giving bicycle training to kids. I received similar training from cops in the 1960s. By the 1980s, where I raised a kid the community gave zero support to kids with respect to bikes. I asked around the city and the only thing any city employee could direct me to was a poster telling kids to wear a helmet. Instead of helping educate the kids on riding skills, tell the parents to buy them a helmet.
