Bicycle Mechanics - Do you grease the sprockets ?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I rub grease on the cogs, pulleys and front chainrings
,but it makes the chain really dirty after every ride.
how about if I'll clean everything and just leave it like that ungreased ?
(except for the chain-lube of course).
By all means, clean everything up and just lube the chain (and remember to wipe off any excess). Your pulleys and cogs don't want any grease on them. The only part of the pulley that might want some silicon or graphite (i.e. dry) lubricant are the bushings. The external portion of the pulleys ought to be clean.

I agree with SteveE, clean it up. Chain lube only. Remember that this is an open, ie not sealed, drivetrain. When you grease it, the grease attracts dirt and sand and basiscally makes a sandpaper paste.

Please define the word GREASE.
I have this dreadful picture in my mind of you smearing axle grease all over everything...or using a greasegun and just going for it.

That's right buddy, all over the drivetrain, and not just for no reason but because I was told
to do so.
By who ? by my uncle who was a road racer back in the late 70's early 80's,
I guess this is what they did 25 years ago.(I was 3 y/o then).
I only did that a couple of times though.

Most spockets are plated or otherwise protected against rust.
If you do want to protect metal against rust, eg exposed cables and bolts, then wax is a far better material. Furniture polish, car wax or bike wax/lubes like White Lightening do not attract dirt.
