A while back we had a thread discussing how to get rid of cram and lead a simpler life.

I have been trying to get rid of a functioning gas clothes dryer (my house is set up for electric...). Neither Goodwill nor Salvation Army seemed to be interested, so I listed it on Freecycle and within a couple of days, it was history.

Anyone used Freecycle? Based on some photos of LCF garages, I would recommend it as a means of clearing out those older bikes.

^ or if you have a local co-op, consider donating your old bikes to them.

I'm signed up on our Freecycle, but haven't really used it.

I got a brand-new wireless phone a feww years ago. The lady lived in a suburb a few miles from my rather dicey inner city neighborhood. I told her I'd be riding my bike out to pick up the phone. She said, don't bother, I'll bring it to you. She looked so out-of-place when she pulled up in her brand new Jaguar! But she was a good sport. She said she won the phone as a door prize, didn't need it and didn't want to hassle with selling it. I was very happy to get a top rated phone still in it's box.

I think it may depend on the part of the country you are in. I have disposed of a few things on our local freecycle list, however the bulk of the posts are people looking for something. I have friends outside of Jacksonville, FL and their list is much more active on the trade/give away side.

I think it depends a lot on the quality of the local group's administration. They should try to encourage more giving and less wanting, so to speak.

I was able to get an older schwinn touring bike for free through Freecycle. My friend now rides that thing since it is too small for me and it can't really compete against my Crosscheck. I tend to serve as a midway point between people here in town that need a commuting bicycle and the actual bicycles. People know to bring bicycles to me that they don't want and people know to come to me that need bicycles.

You sound like a one-man bike co-op. :thumb:

I have been on the Freecycle site around here for a few months. So far haven't received anything, but did donate an old Schwinn 3-wheeler to a church group fixing up bikes for the handi-capped. That was back in July...I think. I put up a note about bicycles once when I was thinking of working on some this summer, and the only response I got was from one guy that said he would "sell" me all his bikes and parts.....I told him thanks, but no thanks....
