Bicycle Mechanics - Front End Creak

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

On my road bike with shimano STI on it, whenever I turn the fork there is this audible creaking noise. Could it be in the headset or is it possible the cables are too tight or something or maybe need a drop of lube? I dont think its a fork/headset problem because I can hold the front brakes on and rock the bike and there is no noise indicating a loose headset or anything like that. I have a threadless fork and stem if that offers any more useful info.

I have a similar problem that happens occasionally when I turn the bars. I checked further and discovered that if I just bend the cable housing for the front der., I also hear the creaking, so this is my culprit. Obviously, the motion of the cable causes some sort of friction within the cabling (I think at the barrel adjuster), but I've not yet determined how to correct it. I'm not too worried about it since it doesn't interfere with operation.

Often you get this sound as the housing end moves in the stop. You can do the trick where you shift all the way over while pedaling and then shift back, while not pedaling to put slack in the cables. Then you can move them far enough to put a little dab of grease on the housing end. If the ends are black plastic, look closely to make sure the housing wires are not poking out. If they are you will need to remove the cable and ttrim the end of the housing or replace it and install a new end. (I would also install a new cable at this point.)

Could also be the shifter housings striking the frame.
