I have 2 Trek 4300's. They have the POS Shimano EF29 shifters on them. I rode both of them today and oddly enough the rear der. shifter started to stick on both of them. Actually the older bike had been having symptoms for awhile but the newer one joined in today.

I unscrewed the "dust cover" (top) of the shifter on one bike and hit it with some spray lube. WOW! they started to shift like magic in seconds. They are smooth and shift sooooooooooo much easier. I don't ever see this as a recommended maintenance item for bikes but it will be for me from now on. Obviously the lube will attract some dirt, so I tried to get rid of as much as possible but hey, I can deal with that. It beats the heck out of carpal tunnel from leaning on a sticky shifter.

Why doesn't anyone mention lubing shifters?

what kind of lube did you spray the top of the shifters with?
