Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

First of all, how many speeds do you have on your mountain bike? How many gears on the front and how many on the back?
Second of all, does anyone know where I can get rapidfire or ez fire shifters for a 21 spd bike, I tried ebay but their rapids look STRANGE. Their like Wiry. I thought rapids look like ez's only with an individual pod instead. Someone post a pic and tell me where I can get 7 spd rear shift and 3 spd front. A total of 21 spds.

so maelstom u have 2 in front and 9 in abck?
or 3 and 6? HOW WOULD YOU GET SHIFTERS FOR A 6 SPEED?!?! ANYTHING UNDER 9 now is UNCOMMON. And if you do run 2 in front, wouldn't the chain rub against the front derailler on the the most edgeward gears , like 1 and 9?

i got ez fire shifter. 20 bucks and they are yours. They have seen minimal usage. Rode them for 10km on my department store bike before swapping them out. Lemme know if you want them. PM me.

Yep 2 and 9. I don't do bigrings. I find them useless for my riding style and they don't allow me to pop over obstacles. Eventually I may drop to one ring on the roast as it will server a djer / light trail bike while my bighit will be my all round bike.

Speeds: Occasionally fast (by my reckoning), frequently slow, sometimes plodding, once in a while barely moving (usually at the top of a climb) and, of course, stopped.
Gears: 3x9 on mt bike, 2x9 on road bike.
Sorry, can't answer the rapid fire question... takes all I have just to keep moving! :D

My mountain bike has 3x9.
My old mountain bike, which is now my commuter bike, is 3x7. I recently switched the grip shifter to rapid fire shifters. I got a set of rapid fire shifters from my local bike shop for like $15, brand new.
I find that I use all speeds (27) on my mountain bike. Sometimes we have to ride on the road for a couple miles to get the trail, and I use the hardest gear on the road all the time.

hooligan, if you are looking for older 7 speed stuff try: www.loosescrews.com (http://www.loosescrews.com). They have a lot of older harder to find parts. Yes, I know what you are thinking: But my bike is brand new. You are correct in that it is new, but the 7-speed stuff is a few years old now. That is one of the ways they save money on department store bikes.
Here is a direct link for your shifters: Click here!!! (http://www.loosescrews.com/index.cgi?c=Shifter&sc=Mountain%20Shifters&id=4638366413)

mountain bike = 3 front 9 rear. I don't use the higher gears that much except on the road but they are nice to have.
beater bike = 2 front 7 rear I think. I just play with that one so I don't really pay too much attention.

acutally, I knew they were old. But I didn't udenr stand how you could have 2 in front, 9 in rear and not have chian rubbing againt derailler all the time at the edge gears
heh, that's odd. I went to the bike shop the other day, because they had a sale. I picked up front and rear rapid fire shifters for my 7 speed MTB for 15 bucks total. They had a ton of 'em.

If anything a properly adjusted 2x9 will have less chain-rub than a 3x9. All you have to do is adjust the limit screws so that it stops in the right place. It's probably also good to adjust the chainline too. This is most easily done if you have an adjustable bottom bracket. FWIW, my MTB is a 3x9 (27 speeds) and my RB is a 2x9 (18 speeds).

Bikeman.com look under components then mountain shifter brake lever set. Make sure you choose the set with the brake lever that fits your braking unit. V-brake vs. cantilever. They have the 7speed shifter unit there because I have just purchased a set for one of my bikes.
