take off your wheel first..
for threaded forks/headsets.. first remove the stem by loosening the bolt on top of the stem, then loosen up the nuts of the headset until the fork can be removed...

for threadless forks.. remove the top cap by loosening the bolt on top of the stem. Then loosen the stem clamp bolts. slide up the stem. that's it.

or better yet, since you have not seen this done before, bring your bike to a qualified bicycle mechanic.

OR you could go down to your local library, find a book on bicycling or bicycle maintenance and actually READ and LEARN about how to do this. Or you could just find the appropriate chapters in the Barnetts manuals at the top of the page...

I don't have my barnett's manual in front of me right now, but I seem to remember seeing nicely done line drawings of almost everything in there. Go to your library and RTFM. Besides which, if you've got V-brakes (which you said you have) and Quick Release skewers (which I assume you have at least on the front) removing the wheel should be entirely intuitive, and removing the fork only slightly less so.

If you don't know how to remove your wheel, you have no business removing your fork. Take the bike to an LBS and have them perform whatever it is that you need done.

I second that. Removing the wheel is the most basic thing and if you are having trouble with that, the removiable of the fork will be impossible. Bring it to your LBS for instructions.
