Classic & Vintage - 1979 CCM Bike Colors / Charts? (Help!)

Hi all.

First off, great forum! I've had a blast reading about some of the old bikes I remember seeing around town.

I'm hoping someone can help me here. I'm restoring a 1979 CCM Turismo which was repainted some time ago. It was originally red, but I would like to know the specific type of red that was used by the factory.

Does someone have the original color charts or codes, or possibly a 1979 CCM brochure or mnanual that might help? Is there another informative website out there that I might have missed?

I have to say that information on this vintage of CCM is scarce at best.

Joe - welcome aboard.....can't help directly, but wanted to suggest you also do a search for old Canadian Tire catalogs. Since they sold a lot of CCMs you may find what you need through an old catalog.

I seem to recall there are a couple of CCM fans on this list - I'm sure they'll chime in.

Finally, you should know already: post pictures!

Sorry everyone. It has been almost 2 years and alot has happened in that time - one of them was the completion of the restoration.

As my earlier posts indicated, there is scarcely little information out there on the Turismo (except the 1972; its introductory year, I believe). I learned that the later Turismos were considered "department store bicycles", meaning that they were manufactured for several different retailers, Sears (Free-Spirit), Canadian Tire (Supercycle), and Zellers, etc (Skyline) . . . and of course, CCM Turismo. Because of their lowly status in the CCM bike line hierarchy, no mention of them was made in brochures. I got my hands on a 1977 CCM brochure and , sure enough, nothing.

A little about my bike:

I got it in September 1979 for my 11th birthday. My parents bouth it at the local "Home Hardware" for $117.00. It was the only gift I ever asked specifically for. I loved the colour, and how beautifully the bright metal contrasted it. I had an old hi-rise bike that I used as an every day bike, so the Turismo didn't really get all that beat-up. Infact, the only things replaced are the rims (they are the correct V-170's, though). All the rest were "painstakingly" detailed.

Around 1984, the decals started to fade and by 1987, I felt it should be repainted, so I stripped it and gave it to my dad's friend, who owned a body shop, to repaint. It came back with a beautifully-smooth hot pink paintjob - not even close to the original colour. My fault, because I just said "Repaint it", thinking "Repaint it in the original colour" was understood. I threw it back together, but the love affair waned. By then I was 19 and discovered cars, anyway.

The Stat's

Apparently, bikes differ from cars greatly in the information that is retained about older models. With cars, almost all info can be obtained relatively easily; not so with bikes.

Luckily, I am friends with a crackerjack body man who came up with an exact match. While preparing my bike for its current paint, he stripped away the hot pnk paint and found an area where the original paint remained. After trial-and-error, the match was found: 1993 Ford Ultra Red - remember that one if you're going to be restoring one in the future.

I ended up working with another firend - a computer guy with extraordinary talents, going off of a pic of my bike when new and another pic of an earlier Turismo. With those, the 2 decals were re-created exactly. The CCM decals (forks and below the handle bars) were also re-creations.

The result is pictured above. It's just as stunning today as it was for me in 1979! I am not a huge "bike guy" - I just love preserving the past. I'm quite sure that no great monitary value will ever be attached to this bike, but that was never the point anyhow.

This is really interesting. The orignal Turismo was last produced in 1972. I have CCM literature for all the intervening years, up to their 1983 bankruptcy, with the sole exception of 1978. Nothing I have lists a Turismo. Consequently, I'd be really interested in seeing pics of your bicycle. Unfortunately the attchment doesn't appear to be working. I'd also appreciate the serial number.

I'd also love to see the pictures (attachment not working for me either) on a quasi-related note there's a (pretty rough) Turismo up for sale in my area. I would love to try and use it for a polo bike (never played, hoping to this year) ...

Now, that's a 1972 Turismo, with some changes.

I don't know why it's so difficult to post pics here for me, but it is. Anyway, I'll try again. Let me get back to you with the serial #.

Don't try to attach pics directly. Post your pics to Photobucket or something similar and then post a link.

I'm not sure what year it is, but it is a lime color with shimano derailers.
I don't know the wheel specifications for it because i need another wheel and i dont have anything to measure it with, so does anyone know the wheel specifications?
