I feel like this should have been answered somewhere but I can't seem to find it.

What does the size (40 cm, etc.) on aero bars mean? I'm trying to buy some off ebay for my tri bike, but idk what the numbers mean and I don't want bars I cant use or that don't work for me.

*edit*
ok so I think there's a number for length of bars and width of bar they fit onto (clip-ons). How do I know how long I need?
*edit*

Thanks for the help.

That would indicate the width of the bar. Like from the farthest grip on the left to the farthest grip on the right. Usually your supposed to measure your shoulder width and go off of that number.

Well unless your talking about clip on aero bars, in which case I'm not sure and this post is useless. Have a link to what your talking about?

Hope that helps.
