Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Anyone who has painted their "Windsor hour"

Did you strip it down to the metal, or sand and paint over the existing paint job?
what paint did you use?
And how did they turn out?

I'm in the process of doing this now with my SS/MTB, but it had super ****ty paint, I figured the Windsor's paint might make a good base, but I was worried about the decals showing through because you can feel the edges of them through the "clear coat"... I guess if I'm going to do it, do it right. I'm just not looking forward to the down time.

It's possible to paint over the existing paint job, but you'll have to remove the decals and feather out where there's a ridge from paint build up. It would be almost as much work as stripping it, but you would only have to worry about a smaller patch that needed to be acid etched before you primed your feathering. Keep in mind you would have to use some type of sealer or primer, and nib that to get rid of your feathering marks. So again, it would be easier to strip, just make sure to use both chemical and mechanical adhesion (sanding/scuffing and an etching primer) before you prime/base(SS)/clear.

Yeah, and while it's apart I'll be able to re-grease all the bearings as prescribed for the Windsors in other threads. So I guess it's no all bad.

I hope my MTB paint holds I chemical stripped, wire brushed, sanded, and primed. I've never heard of this etching until digging up old threads today.

Yeah. Strip, sand, prime, paint, clear coat. I'd be careful with the clear coat though. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't.

And I used Rustoleum brand stuff. Krylon sucks.

Ooh, it will hold for a while...you might get some delamination down the road, generally any bare metal areas over a quarter needs to be etched first. An area that big of raw metal might have some issues, but if it does you know what to do on round two.
