thanks guys, this forum has been a great help to give me some good ideas and advice as I prepare to do the MS150 Houston to Austin. I have been a very infrequent mtb-er (stopped biking with any regularity almost 10 yrs ago), and decided to do the MS150 with my wife (her mom has MS so we thought it would be a great thing to do to show our support for her). My wife made the decision only a few weeks ago to do it, and I decided after a few training rides with her that I could probably also make it. So, our practice schedule is a bit more compressed than I would like.
I am doing the 150 on my mtb, but have been making all the changes to make the bike fairly road-worthy. I am a big guy (both height and lb -wise), and my gary fisher with the long top tube actually works fairly well on road, as I can get fairly stretched out (not upright like some of the other mtbs) and comfortable. I'm up to about 40 miles with out too much pain, so I think i should be ok for the ride in 2 wks if I keep lengthening the training. Luckily my wife (although on a road bike and in much better shape than me) is fairly slow, so we will not be setting any speed records on the ride.
I took everyone's advice and upgraded to the clipless pedals......huge improvement. No problems so far on the training rides, and I got the hang of clipping in and out pretty quickly. Although I did have the "mandatory" fall AFTER a training ride when I took my 3yr old out for a quick lap around the block. I unclipped the left side, but fell to the right. He looked at me and said, "daddy, do you need training wheels like me?" I laughed my arse off.
so anyway, wanted to say thanks, and I hope to stay around here even after the 150 as I think I may be hooked.....I'm already thinking of upgrading to a road bike :) cheers
