Yesterday I met Prophet (aka Doug) at the Nimbus fish hatchery for a ride. I left home with plenty of time for the 8.5 mile ride up there. It was pretty chilly at around 50 degrees. I bundled up with a longsleeve T-shirt and a fleece jersey. Bike shorts with tights over. And toe covers for my shoes. Not to mention some light gloves!
I arrived a bit early and went to see the fish. The fish ladder that leads to the breeding area was open and the salmon were pretty darned big. Not as many as I wanted to see though. The population is down.
I met up with Doug and we headed out for our ride. The plan was to ride around the North side of Lake Natoma up to Folsom and climb up to Folsom lake. It's a pretty good climb up to Folsom lake. I was climbing well. I think it was the easiest time I've ever had getting up there.
Doug and I took a short B/R break at the lake and refilled water bottles before heading back down. He dropped me like a stone on the descent! Payback for the climb I suppose. I had to work to keep up with him.
At the bottom of the hill we crossed over at the top of Lake Natoma to Folsom and picked up the South side of the trail and made it back to the Fish Hatchery. Pace was pretty high. We were riding at 16/17mph for much of the ride. Doug is a strong rider and I'm looking forward to riding with him again.
I took it pretty easy on the ride home as I rode 65 miles today with my wife and wanted to make sure I would have the legs for it.
All in all, a good time and good company.
