hey ...I was just gonna start a knife thread.

I'd like to know the answer myself...a lot of these tactical knives are supposed to be taken apart for cleaning, but many come with plain hex bolts. I'm not sure what to do with those thingies

Well the handle grips are getting loose from opening it and they are probably going to fall off sometime soon so I need something to tighten it. I will be putting thread locker on. Another one I had, had a clip that came off. It also had the same type of screws, but I couldn't find anything at the store that would fit.

I'd try someplace that sells S&W knives (brick and mortar or a web site)... I just looked up S&W but their site is on the fritz.

Something like CR (http://www.knifeart.com/chrisreeve.html) is easy to take apart (at least it looks like it in videos I've seen). I thought there'd be accessories like that tool on this site but doesn't look like it...I have a knife with the same little nuts, so I'll need one eventually myself.

pgoat

I won't take mine apart. I keep mine clean the way I do with my bikes. "Floss" and lots of oil. The springs and the insides are too sensitive. I skeered.

As a matter of fact, to enforce that diddy about the springs, Michigander gifted me a special knife and he did in fact put something over the screws to keep me from.....screwing with them. And plus the screws won't get loose with that stuff on it.

Like lock-tite? That's a good idea.

I think the take-it-apart and clean it mentality in the knife world comes from guys using them to dress game when hunting....the most dangerous thing i hunt is a good Emmantaler or Jarlsberg cheese, but I still worry about getting it clean enough:o

Nice CF! :thumb:

yes, good point; I believe it's the blade length only that matters ,and that it's is a state regulated thing. I'm guessing that S&W is a 3 15/16" blade as 4" is considered too big in many states.

I don't even carry a knife anymore...things have calmed down here now but for several years after 9.11 they'd stop you and do random searches...I almost had a few knives taken away, even thought they were pretty small innocuous things well within legal limits. I got tired of arguing so now I just open things with my teeth and fingernails:notamused:

Nice, tool. :D

Yup, you'll need a Torx set to tighten that down. Blue Loctite or in a pinch clear nail polish...it can still be removed and if you need to, you can dissolve with nail polish remover...my friend uses it on his scope rings for his Thomson Contender.

My EDC is a Chris Reeves Sebenza, replacing a Benchmade Griptilian, which replaced a lost Benchmade AFCK. On occassion I carry two Spyderco Endura (1) plain and (1) serrated.

The black one doesn't (it's riveted). The silver one does use torx screws (they're on the other side of the handle).

The Centofante IV (black handle) is about $45 which isn't that expensive for what you get. The Adventura is ~$75 mostly due to the stainless steel handle. Spyderco has some great entry-level/mass market knives that perform just as good as knives costing 2-4 times more.

The world of cutlery is kinda like cycling... The principle in the "$200 walmart bike vs. $750 entry level road bike" argument generally applies to most knives as well. :D $40-50 is the price point where you start getting a real cutting tool that will last quite a while.

I have a spyderco a buddy gave me when I was a backcountry guide.
You can open it with one hand which is useful when you work
around livestock a lot. It will last forever because it sits
in the bottom of my tool box because I can't sharpen it very well
and that steel is hard like rock.

Indeed. Actually one of my favorites were the Opinels - $8 at Williams Sonoma:D But they get all funky and loose too quickly, I always worried they'd fail and there go your fingers, so I got rid of mine. They are great in the kitchen tho. I kept one big one for a our picnic bag and we used to use the little ones as table cutlery when my wife still ate meat.

Centofante makes a very nice knife.

just curious - what do you use to sharpen? stones? I am still getting the hang of all that.

One reason I loved the Opinels was they sharpened super easily. Didn't hold an edge so very long but at that price, who cares?

What the round thing on top of the blade?

pgoat
11-30-08, 12:38 AM
This one (http://www.knifeart.com/noname4.html) is is my favorite. He made them in a smaller pattern and I requested a bigger handle with the legal blade (under 4") and now he makes them regularly.

I've always liked Loveless knives and finally held one once at a show. If any freaking knife is worth several thousand dollars it was that one. It was like God read your mind and said "here, I think you'll like this knife." But since I don't have $5000+ kicking around (If I did I'd be at the bike shop) the Matsuno is close enough....

Yes and a tad 'spensive. I wouldn't buy one for myself. This knife was the one Mich carried with him everywhere. And when he came here I really really thought it was a beautiful knife and he offered it to me. Of course I said no but on his last day here he insisted I take it as a gift. During that time my company was having a rash of takeover style robberies and he said he would feel better if I had it.

So I graciously accepted it.

He taught me how to take care of it and stressed that oiling the blade was very important. So it stays in my bag with me where ever I go now.

So I have two knives with me at all times.

I think that's what Bob Dozier recommends (He uses D2, which is supposed to be uber hard to sharpen - they use it for saws)

People seem divided on the diamond stuff - say they take off too much metal, others swear by them.

I bought one of those spyderco rod things ...It works okay, The best thing I found was a little orange thingy you can carry in your pocket; it has coarse and fine grit slots. It's only about $8 at hardware and camping stores, and it actually works great

It might be a 'false' upper edge...ie, only sharpened on the one side. It says legal for carry etc....that would stink if they said that and failed to mention it was a double edge.

Siu Blue Wind
11-30-08, 12:51 AM
One edge is sharpened the other is faux. It should be fine. Mich had actually told me about the second edge and he sent me a copy of the California law that stated it that. I don't know where it is in my files but although it's "double edge" its not sharpened on one side. I'm sure it CAN be sharpened but this knife so far has not had that done to it on either side yet. It's still as sharp as ever, so no need as of now.

Thanks for telling me though, and caring. :)
