Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Weinmann DP 18s..again

I think am am close to a wheels decision but do they make a white rim with silver spokes and hub with a flip flop rear? I cant see to find anything with this setup. A lot of white rim with black spokes and hub. Ebay sells one that does not have a braking surface that is white with silver spokes and hub just like a want but it is fixed on both sides and I am going to run it on my single speed Nishiki. Help me out here guys!

Save up and get the Velocity's you'll want them later.

Just get velocities if you ABSOLUTELY NEED A SPECIFIC COLOR SCHEME.

You can put a freewheel on a fixed hub.

well i dont NEED white but I am in love with white wheels. I also really dig the deep v look over a traditional wheels. OK the velocties are better, lighter wheels....well I am just getting into ss and fixed gears and I dont think I will be able to tell from the steel 27's I had on it before. What about the Alex with formula hubs. Would that be a better setup compared to the Weinmanns?

you won't notice the difference between the Deep-V's and the steel 27's because there will be little difference in weight


get something lighter, you'll be much happier with your bike

If you like the deep v look and want something a little lighter than Weinmann's or Velocity's, have a set of Kinlin XR300s built up. I don't know what you mean by "better" but in my case my "better" would be what I want. You said you want 1) white with machined surface 2) silver spokes 3) flip flop hub 4) deep v style.
By the way there is no need for hub to be flip flop to put a freewheel on it. Double fixed/single fixed will work. The fixed threads are enough for a freewheel.

you wouldn't buy a crappier wheelset based on color preference would you? hubs are crazy-important when deciding what wheels you want. rims are important too. velocities are a decent complete wheel, but really look for something laced to some good hubs. tastes change soo fast with track bikes, and once you're over the cheap wheels you got, you wont be able to turn em around. save your money for something that holds its value....and then get it in the color you want.

dont settle for ****ty hubs because you like the color. hubs are almost more important than the rim itself.

also. when you buy crap, the resale value is awful. if you invest more into quality parts, you'll likely get your money back when your color taste changes. and it will.

Wow, thanks for the great feedback everyone. OK, so aside from wanting the perfect color and everything, what is the cheapest, lightest wheelset out their for me that has the best quality hubs? Bikeisland.com has a bunch of Vuelta sets laced with formula hubs and benscycle.com has a bunch of Alex wheelsets that include Formula as well and/or Joy Ride? Or something long those lines.

With the advice you guys just gave me, I think I want the lightest wheels possible in my price range now, regardless of what it may look like!

you are new so you dont need phils. formulas will be fine.

Well right around there is a good price range. Obviously the cheaper the better lol, college budgeted here. SO basically anything with Formula hubs would be a good choice? What about the wheel sets on island that include the Mich. tires too? That would def. save me some money I would think.

Well for cheaper the better, keep your front wheel you have now and just get a rear wheel with a track hub. How about finding used like a take off wheel from a Pista/Steamroller/etc?

You pay for quality. Seriously, unless you know how to build wheels yourself. The reason why you can find such inexpensive wheelsets is because they're machine built garbage that's never been touched by a human.

nothing, im all for em. i was talking about lower end deep v style wheels. velocities laced to formulas are solid and have decent resale value. that said, there are awesome value wheelseets out there. bensbikes had a set of solid alex's hand laced to formulas for $97. that was ridiculous for the price.

I think that may be the set im going to get after all. Although I really want deep v's, I do want something lighter than my old 27s that were original to the bike. What would be a good starter tire for me guys? All black, obviously inexpensive too lol.

sealed vs loose ball bearings where they are literally.... loose balls within the hubs that can be replaced (individually), serviced, and such.

sealed is a more weather friendly and easier to manage to some degree

i've owned a couple loose ball components and you can get them to spin really nice. with quality sealed catridges like phils, u can also get a nice spin. so it's preference really.
