Today I raced my first cyclocross race.
I don't have a cross bike. Instead I put brakes on my IRO, geared it 42x18 with a freewheel, and put some borrowed 'cross tires on my wheels. It looked like this:

Staten Island cross was very wet, which made it very cold. The course was mostly flat, with lots of tight turns, a few good and muddy spots, and made good use of natural obstacles - ditches, short hills, a beach, and a whole wooded area with gutters, exposed rocks and roots, off-camber turns, narrow hardpack ledges, and a steep run-up.
Extremely fun ****.
I highly recommend racing cyclocross.
