Nylon doesn't work too well when I need to pin some numbers on. It seems as if there's gonna be four huge holes in my vest by the end of the season.
Any alternatives other than to get a jersey w/ different material?

velcro
Sew loops onto the jersey. Pin numbers to loops

I pin my numbers to the back pocket area. The small holes are not noticeable and the lower location prevents fluttering.

I never noticed any problem with any of my jerseys or any of my running shirts for that matter. I don't think you can tell where numbers were pinned on any of them.
BTW: What do you mean by vest? Do you mean jersey, or is the problem with some kind of hi visibility vest?

If one really likes a jersey and has paid top dollar for a nice team kit, it makes a lot of difference about the pin holes. Runner's clothing is not nearly the significance of a rider's kit.

Double-sided tape? I've also just looped numbers over the toptube and pinned the corners together.
