I posted this question on the general bicycling discussion board and then saw that there is a charity board. Have some of you had experiences with charities which give bicycles to people in 3rd/4th world countries? Like this for instance?

This is just one of many I have seen referenced. But I do not know which ones are good charities who actually do what they say they do. And I wonder if the poorest of the poor really do want bicycles and if they really do help better their lives. Is this truly practical help or is this merely wishful thinking on the part of people living in wealthier countries who bicycle for fun or fitness or because of philosophical ideas and not because it is most practical or necessary.

I hear this is a good organization. I've seen several fund raisers for it here in Portland.
